Democratic Senators Demand Information from DeVos on Failure to Pay Record Campaign Finance Violation Fines Ahead of Confirmation Hearing

WASHINGTON Today, U.S. Senators Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) again called on Trump Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos to provide information on the blatant campaign finance violations of her All Children Matter Political Action Committee (PAC), and on the PAC's subsequent refusal to pay $5.3 million in fines to the state of Ohio. DeVos has failed to respond to the senators' earlier inquiry about her PAC's illegal activities, indicating through a spokesperson that she has no plans to ensure the record fine is paid prior to her upcoming confirmation hearing.

Udall, Heinrich Praise Enactment of American Innovation and Competitiveness Act

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich praised the enactment of S. 3084, the American Innovation and Competitiveness Act (AICA), a major science bill that includes a number of significant provisions Udall and Heinrich championed to help boost New Mexico's economy. The bill, which passed both houses of Congress last month and was signed into law by President Obama today, contains measures to boost technology transfer initiatives, strengthen and grow manufacturing, and encourage private-sector innovation.

Tom Urges FTC to Crack Down on False Claims by Sports Equipment Makers

In a hearing of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, Senator Tom Udall highlighted dangerous and deceptive claims by the sports equipment maker "Shock Doctor," which says its mouth guards protect against brain concussions. Udall said such practices put players at unnecessary risk and urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to step in and prevent Shock Doctor and other sports equipment manufacturers from marketing their products using false claims about safety.

Tom Proposes Senate Rules Change to Fix Broken Judicial Confirmation Process

In a speech on the Senate floor, Senator Tom Udall laid out his rules reform proposal to address the broken judicial confirmation process, which has been spotlighted by Judge Merrick Garland's failed nomination for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.

In Forest Service Budget Hearing, Tom Pushes to Fund Severe Wildfires as Natural Disasters

Senator Tom Udall pressed U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell on the agency's ability to meet the escalating costs of wildfire suppression and the urgent need to fix how the government pays to fight increasingly frequent big, expensive wildfires. Udall and Tidwell also discussed the proposed Gila River diversion project, working with New Mexico's traditional communities, the closing of the Mescalero Forest Products sawmill and how to better coordinate Forest Service hiring in the Southwest.
