  • San Antonio Express News: Export-Import Bank supports border economy
Posted in Op-Eds on September 24, 2014 | Preview rr

Reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank is about helping America win. The House last week voted on a continuing resolution that included a reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank until June 30, 2015. I voted to support that extension but a long-term reauthorization of the bank must be passed to provide stability to businesses that rely on its export support. Chartered in 1945, the Export-Import Bank is one of the most important tools for job creation. It helps our companies compete against foreig... Read more

What's next for Washington on the border crisis By Henry Cuellar, Aug. 13, 2014 Photo by Jack Dean The whole country has been watching as a humanitarian crisis unfolds on our southern border while Washington does nothing. In fact, earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would redirect money during the middle of hurricane season from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deal with the humanitarian crisis at the border. This is not the leadership our constit... Read more

Rep. Cuellar: Neither party owns all the good ideas By HENRY CUELLAR Published: 07 August 2014 09:42 PM Updated: 08 August 2014 10:33 AM Americans are disappointed with the job Congress is doing, with good reason. Last week’s failure of Congress to send President Barack Obama a supplemental appropriations bill to address the border humanitarian crisis is just the most recent example showing that Congress is broken and taxpayers have a right to be frustrated. Another delayed vote, another deadli... Read more

More than once over the past two months, I have visited the McAllen Border Patrol facility and the HHS facility at Lackland AFB where undocumented immigrant children are being processed. As a family man and father, the sight of hundreds of children alone, scared and far from home is a powerful and moving experience. Visiting with some of the children, such as Emilia, 9, from Honduras and Miguel, 14, from El Salvador and hearing their stories left a deep impression. Congress needs to take immedia... Read more

U.S. Law Is Putting Children at Risk A 2008 law for trafficking victims needs an update. Time to change the process for unaccompanied children who come into the U.S. By Henry Cuellar July 23, 2014 | 9:00 a.m. EDT+ More Over the past two months, I have toured the Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, and the Department of Health and Human Services facility at Lackland Air Force Base where immigrant children without legal status are being processed. As a father myself, the sight of hundreds of... Read more

11 Million Jobs Supported by Trade in the United States Just in 2013, 11 million jobs were supported by trade in the United States. In Texas, a total of 40,737 companies were dependent on exports -- 93 percent of which were small businesses, with 500 or fewer employees. With May being World Trade Month, I would like to emphasize the role that international trade has on our economy. We have an opportunity to expand upon that economic productivity with the development of the Trans-Pacific Partners... Read more

COMMENTARY: Stopping the flow of drugs internationally U.S. REP. HENRY CUELLAR | Guest columnist I recently joined Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., and other members of the Appropriations Committee to meet with Colombian and Mexican officials to discuss joint efforts to combat the spread of illegal narcotics. The United States, Mexico and Colombia have a partnership to eradicate illegal drug crops, disrupt supply chains and seize shipments. As part of this partnership, the Un... Read more

Investor center program should become permanent BY HENRY CUELLAR, GUEST COMMENTARY : APRIL 22, 2014 As chairman of the Pro-Trade Caucus in Congress, I was active in leading efforts on trade agreements that create more American jobs and generate economic growth. Thanks in part to robust international trade and strong retail growth, Laredo's unemployment rate is lower than the national average. But there is more we can do to propel it forward and further create more jobs. The EB-5 Regional Progra... Read more

Fairly reforming Medicare based on quality, not quantity, of care This year, Congress came closer than it ever has before to finding a permanent fix to the flawed formula that provides Medicare reimbursement to doctors. I signed on to the legislative fix, H.R. 4015, the SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act of 2014, which would transition Medicare away from a system where doctors are paid based on the number of patients they treat toward a system that is based on the quality... The impact of international trade can be felt in every town, city, and business across the United States. It creates jobs, supports small businesses, and puts more money in the pocket of hardworking Americans. We have a responsibility to our nation's still fragile economy to take every reasonable step to invest in this critical segment of the economy that touches nearly every state in the country. Last week, the president was in Mexico for a meeting with Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto, an... Read more
