Intern Program

How to . . . Apply for an internship with my office

If you are interested in public service and federal government, I encourage you to apply for an internship with my office. Internships are available to undergraduate college students in my Washington, D.C. office, as well as my four state offices – located in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno.

Working with the Washington, D.C. staff gives students a chance to see how the Senate functions and how it interacts with the House of Representatives and the executive and judicial branches. Working in one of the state offices provides a local perspective on how my office assists constituents resolve issues they have with the federal government.

Interns in Washington, D.C. split their time between assisting my legislative staff and working with one of the administrative departments, which include the executive staff, the press office and mail services. In my Washington office, intern duties may include:

  • Tracking legislation and researching issues for the Legislative Assistants;
  • Assisting in drafting statements for the Congressional Record;
  • Attending committee hearings;
  • Handling constituent phone calls and requests;
  • Assisting with correspondence;
  • Giving tours of the Capitol; and
  • Assisting with newspaper clippings and conducting research for press projects.

In the state offices, the intern duties may include:

  • Drafting constituent letters;
  • Conducting research;
  • Attending community meetings;
  • Helping the staff with advance work for my visits to the state;
  • Opening and sorting mail; and
