*McConnell/Feinstein bill calls for renewed sanctions against Burmese junta*

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on Thursday called on their colleagues to quickly approve their legislation to renew sanctions against the Burmese junta, “The Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act.”

The McConnell/Feinstein bill calls for the renewal of sanctions against the Burmese regime, which include an import ban on Burmese goods entering the U.S. and visa restrictions on officials from the dictatorial regime – the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).

“Last month, the whole world got a close look at the SPDC’s contempt for human life when a devastating cyclone hit Burma. No one can say with certainty the full toll of death and destruction from the storm—but we do know the junta compounded matters through its inaction and utter disregard for the Burmese people,” Sen. McConnell said. “These sanctions will make clear to the SPDC that the United States continues to stand squarely with the long-suffering people of Burma and against the morally bankrupt junta.

“The Burmese military junta has done nothing over the past year to warrant the lifting of these sanctions – and the devastating cyclone only underscored this point. The regime’s refusal to allow in international aid organizations to assess the storm’s destruction and to respond to the suffering of its own people is inhumane,” Senator Feinstein said. “The United States Senate must continue to renew these sanctions – until the SPDC engages in real national reconciliation, until it releases all political prisoners, and until Aung San Suu Kyi and all of the people of Burma can live in a free and democratic society.”

The McConnell/Feinstein bill will in no way hinder or block America’s continuing efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the people in Burma in the wake of the cyclone. The legislation imposes sanctions on trade, not humanitarian aid.

‘Instead of choosing a bipartisan path, Democrats have chosen to play partisan politics by objecting to moving forward with Sen. Grassley’s alternative, insisting instead on voting on a bill which will never become law’

Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell delivered the following remarks on the Senate floor Thursday regarding the Democrats’ obstruction of a bipartisan Medicare bill:

“Our greatest successes this Congress have come when both sides worked together. We saw it last year on the energy bill when we increased CAFE standards to historic levels and, more recently, on the economic stimulus bill.

“And we started down the same path towards compromise when we began Medicare discussions. Both sides wanted to prevent cuts to physicians in the Medicare program and preserve access to the quality medical care our seniors have come to depend on.

“Unfortunately, the Majority walked away from these bipartisan discussions.

“In an effort to preserve some of the progress, protect benefits for seniors and produce a bill that could be signed into law, Sen. Grassley crafted a Medicare bill which should be passed today in the Senate and sent to the President.

“Sen. Grassley’s legislation includes:

“A 1.1 percent increase in physician update and protection for patients who need expensive therapies following a stroke;

“Two years of funding for the Special Diabetes Program;

“A new cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation benefit; This is especially important in Kentucky, where far too many of our citizens struggle with pulmonary diseases.

“A new program to improve care and save money by encouraging doctor’s to write prescriptions electronically.

“It also preserves patient choice and access to Medicare Advantage, which helps retired Kentucky teachers.

“Unfortunately, instead of choosing a bipartisan path, Democrats have once again chosen to play partisan politics by objecting to moving forward with Sen. Grassley’s alternative, insisting instead on voting on a bill which will never become law.

“We all know this is merely an exercise, and that Democrats will return to negotiations after the Senate votes down this doomed bill. Let’s expedite this process and create a bipartisan compromise before July 1.”

Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Thursday regarding the Democrats’ decision to block a vote on Medicare legislation which prevents cuts to physicians and preserves patient access:

“Millions of American seniors rely on the benefits provided under Medicare, and we must ensure that the program continues to serve their needs. We started the process of preventing a cut to physicians in the Medicare program by working together because we realized our greatest successes this Congress have been bipartisan ones. It appeared we were making real progress towards crafting bipartisan legislation until the Majority walked away from the negotiating table.

“Republicans recognized the Senate needed a solution that was more than a political exercise – we needed legislation which could be signed into law. Sen. Grassley crafted a package which includes increased payments for physicians, and preserved benefits, without cutting seniors’ access to healthcare through Medicare Advantage Private Fee for Service Plans.

“Unfortunately, instead of choosing a bipartisan path, Democrats have once again chosen to play partisan politics by objecting to moving forward with Sen. Grassley’s alternative, insisting instead on voting on a bill which will never become law. Now that this political exercise is complete, we should return to the negotiating table to create a bipartisan bill which not only preserves access to quality medical care for seniors and increases payments for costly procedures, but will also be signed into law.”
