McConnell Comments on Rescue of Kentucky Coal Miners

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor Tuesday regarding the rescue of three trapped coal miners near Middlesboro, Kentucky:


“Yesterday I came to the floor to report that there were several miners in Kentucky trapped in a mine as a result of floods.

“I want to start today with an update on that situation.

“I’m happy to report that all three were rescued after spending 14 hours trapped in a Bell County coal mine.

“They were all reunited with their families last night, which is great news.  Their families were waiting for them at the West Cumberland Baptist Church.

“We’re certainly glad that this particular story had a happy ending.”

Debt Talks Should Focus on Entitlement Reform, Spending Cuts—Not Tax Hikes

‘Now, some Democrats are insisting that they’ll only agree to cuts if Republicans agree to raise revenue. That’s Washington speak for tax hikes. And it’s absurd. First of all, is there anyone outside of Washington, D.C. who really thinks that with 14 million people looking for work in this country, the solution is to raise taxes? The last thing you want to do in the middle of a jobs crisis is raise taxes. Even the President has said as much. It’s just common sense.’
