WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced he will cosponsor legislation to establish a national “Blue Alert” system within the U.S. Department of Justice to help catch those who kill or harm law enforcement officers.  The National Blue Alert Act would create a nationwide system similar to what the Amber Alert system does for abducted children. Should law enforcement officers be killed or seriously injured in the line of duty, this system would be utilized to widely disseminate information to help identify and apprehend potential suspects.

“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect Kentuckians and this legislation will help bring justice to those who do harm to our police officers and hopefully help to deter the violence in the first place,” Senator McConnell said. “In light of last week’s violent attack at the Navy Yard and the recent senseless loss of Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis, I wholeheartedly support this legislation on behalf of the thousands of Kentucky brave law enforcement officers.”

The House passed its version of the bill earlier this year.

Washington, D.C.– U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor regarding defunding Obamacare:

“About four years ago, I mounted a campaign right here on the Senate floor against a bill that would come to be as known as Obamacare. Nearly every day we were in session, I spoke about the dangers of this bill for individuals, families, business, and the character of our country. I predicted it would be a complete disaster, and that anyone who voted for it would come to regret it — because the promises that were being made about Obamacare couldn’t possibly be kept.

“And guess what happened: those predictions are now coming true.

“Obamacare hasn’t even been fully implemented yet, but we can already see the train wreck headed our way. Premiums are skyrocketing. Major companies have been dropping the healthcare plans employees have and like. And every week it seems there are new reports about glitches that will hurt families, compromise personal information, or expose the American people to fraud. All of which helps explain why even some of the bill’s fiercest early backers are looking for an escape hatch.

“But there’s only one escape hatch that will fully help those trapped by this law: and that’s full repeal. And that’s why I’m supporting the House-passed CR. Not only does it defund this terrible law, it doesn’t increase government spending by a penny, and it keeps the government from shutting down, which nobody wants. And it does something else: it puts the focus right where it belongs: on the Democrats who voted and continue to vote for Obamacare.

“Once we invoke cloture, the focus will then turn to the Senate Democrats the Majority Leader is counting on to amend it. He can only afford to lose four Democrats if he wants to restore funding for Obamacare. So, if five Senate Democrats vote against the Majority Leader, Obamacare will be defunded. That’s a vote we should want to have.

“Democrats have been hearing the same complaints about Obamacare the rest of us have. The spotlight should be on them.

“This is a rare opportunity to defund this law with a simple majority. We should have that vote.

“I just don’t happen to think filibustering a bill that defunds Obamacare is the best route to defunding Obamacare.

“All it does is shut down the government and keep Obamacare funded. And none of us want that.

“Four years ago, every Democrat who voted for this bill had the excuse that they didn’t know how it would turn out. Well, they don’t have that excuse now. I think we deserve to know where they stand now. Four years ago, every Senate Democrat worked to jam this bill through the Senate, over the loud objections of their constituents. As the implementation of this law proceeds, their constituents remain just as angry about this law, and it is important for their Senators to go on the record again. We are giving them a do-over. Do they stand with the people of their state, who do not want this law to be implemented? Or do they double down on this failed experiment?

“Everybody knows where Republicans stand on this issue. We may be divided on some things. We may not always agree on tactics.

“But on the question of repealing Obamacare, we’re totally united. This law should be defunded. That’s what the House bill does. That’s why I plan to support it. But if we’re going to repeal Obamacare, we’re going to need some Democrat votes to do it. That’s the only plan I've seen in this debate that will actually get us to our common goal of undoing this law. For the sake of our constituents, let's unite to achieve it.

“So this morning, I’d like to make a plea to our friends on the other side. Join us in taking it off the books — and replacing it with the kind of commonsense step-by-step reforms that lower costs and that Americans will actually embrace.”

McConnell Cosponsors Bipartisan Bill to Aid Crime Victims

Kentucky State Police commend Senator McConnell for his leadership and support of the reauthorization of the Justice for All Act

September 20, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced that he will join Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Christopher Coons (D-DE) as a cosponsor of the Justice for All Act, which will help law enforcement crime laboratories eliminate the substantial backlog of DNA samples and improve timely use of DNA technology for crime victims.

Included in the Justice for All Act is the reauthorization of the Debbie Smith Act, which provides resources to crime labs in Kentucky and across the country to help reduce the backlog of untested rape kits and other DNA evidence. The legislation is named after Debbie Smith, who waited several years after being attacked before her rape kit was tested and the perpetrator was caught. Mrs. Smith, a national advocate for rape victims, met with Senator McConnell Thursday in his office and shared her invaluable perspective about the need to eliminate the DNA backlog. She thanked him for his support of the legislation and for his prior efforts to strengthen it.

Senator McConnell said, “I was moved by meeting with Debbie and listening about her advocacy work. As a father of three daughters, I am glad to cosponsor this legislation to help protect Kentuckians by further expanding the Kentucky State Police Lab’s capabilities in speeding up investigations and aiding criminal prosecutions.”

Being a participant in this program has allowed Kentucky State Police Crime Laboratory to reduce its rape kit backlog and increase its processing capacity.

“The Kentucky State Police Laboratories fully support the reauthorization of the Justice for All Act. The Debbie Smith Act has provided resources for our DNA Section of the Laboratories to increase capacity. This in turn has allowed the Kentucky State Police to steadily decrease the amount of time required for an unworked case to sit in line. The Kentucky State Police commend Senator McConnell for his leadership and support of the reauthorization of the Justice for All Act,” said Laura‎ Sudkamp, the Laboratory Director at Kentucky State Police Forensic Laboratories.

Sen. McConnell welcomed Debbie Smith and her husband, Rob Smith, to his office in the U.S. Capitol.
