STANFORD, KYU.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell released the following statement today upon the President signing into law S. 2258 Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2014:

“As a longtime supporter of COLA increases for veterans and military retirees, I was proud to cosponsor this legislation and I am very pleased it was signed into law today. This is great news for our nation’s veterans who sacrificed to defend our country and our freedom and we remain deeply indebted to our heroes. This law will increase disability compensation for our veterans in an effort to help provide Kentucky’s veterans and their survivors with the support they deserve.”

Most recently, Senator McConnell voted against a reduction in COLA benefits for military retirees that was authorized in the December 2013 budget agreement. He later introduced a measure to reinstate this full benefit and voted for legislation enacted in February 2014 that reinstated the full COLA for all military retirees.

McConnell on the Resignation of Eric Holder

‘I will be scrutinizing the President’s replacement nominee to ensure the Justice Department finally returns to prioritizing law enforcement over partisan concerns.’

FLORENCE, KYU.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Eric Holder:

“I could not support the President’s nomination of Eric Holder in 2009 because of the many questionable decisions he’d made as Deputy Attorney General. Five years later, I’m confident in the wisdom of that decision. Holder has placed ideological commitments over a commitment to the rule of law. These are not the qualities the American people look for in the nation’s highest law-enforcement official. So I will be scrutinizing the President’s replacement nominee to ensure the Justice Department finally returns to prioritizing law enforcement over partisan concerns.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced Wednesday that he has cosponsored bipartisan legislation that would better reflect the service and sacrifice of women in the military by updating the federal charter for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States.

Senator McConnell was the first Republican to cosponsor the bill, S.2782. “I am very pleased to work with my Senate colleagues and Kentucky’s VFW leaders in an effort to update the VFW’s Federal charter for our nation’s women veterans. It is an honor to represent Kentucky’s heroes and I remain committed to efforts to better serve the men and women who served in our military, such as pushing the VA to reduce its claims backlog, by supporting the recent VA reform legislation, and by cosponsoring legislation that recently passed Congress to increase COLA disability benefits for our veterans and their survivors,” said Senator McConnell.

“We greatly appreciate Senator McConnell being the first Republican Senate cosponsor of this important bill to update the VFW charter to more accurately honor the role of women veterans and servicemembers. Senator McConnell’s commitment to Kentucky’s veterans is unrivaled and we have no better friend in Washington,” said Brian J. Duffy of Louisville, VFW National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief.

Senator McConnell has long been a leader in Congress for Kentucky veterans. He has been a vigorous advocate for Kentucky’s servicemembers and military families and has supported numerous pieces of legislation important to Kentucky’s veterans. Earlier this year, Senator McConnell delivered remarks on the Senate floor honoring Kentuckian Martha J. Cassity for her military service to our nation and congratulated her on becoming the first woman State Commander of the Kentucky VFW.
