McConnell Statement on OPM Director Resignation

‘The Obama Administration needs to take this opportunity to articulate a credible plan of action, and more thoroughly address the legitimate concerns of the American people’

July 10, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement regarding the resignation of Katherine Archuleta, Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and the need for the Obama administration to ‘articulate a credible plan of action’ to prevent additional breaches of Americans’ personal information:

“The Obama Administration needs to take this opportunity to articulate a credible plan of action, and more thoroughly address the legitimate concerns of the American people, particularly the millions who have been harmed by the lack of competence in confronting a massive cyber-attack. That means showing a resolve to get to the bottom of what happened, that means giving the American people renewed confidence in a creaking bureaucracy, and that means pledging to work with policymakers to enact real reforms rather than accepting failure.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement regarding the nomination of Andy Slavitt as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator:

“The head of the agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid should be focused on what the American people expect him to do: administer these important programs, not allow his attention to be diverted instead to the implementation of some gigantic, unworkable health care law that hurts hardworking Americans. While Andy Slavitt’s nomination will receive thorough consideration in the Senate, it has long been clear that no one can successfully manage a law as unworkable as Obamacare. The sole focus of CMS should be to look out for our nation’s seniors and the many vulnerable Americans who use these programs, without the distraction of Obamacare.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell commented regarding the announcement on Army reductions and the impact on Kentucky military installations:

“Servicemembers and Army civilians at Fort Campbell and Fort Knox are critical to the security of our country.  While Kentucky’s Army installations will not face the substantial reductions announced today impacting facilities in several other states, I remain deeply concerned that the Obama administration’s far-reaching cuts to our armed forces are dangerous to our country’s national security, particularly in light of significant conflict across the globe.”

Background:

  • Senators McConnell and Rand Paul submitted the attached letters relaying his deep concerns with the proposed Army cuts (May 2015 and August 2014)
  • Senator McConnell delivered video messages to the Army played at community listening sessions held at both installations (January 2015: Ft. KnoxFt. Campbell); and hosted a face-to-face meeting with Secretary Carter (May 2015).
