Udall Congratulates Workers, Carlsbad Community on Official Reopening of WIPP

January 9, 2017
  • WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall offered his congratulations and ongoing support for workers, the Department of Energy and the nation's important nuclear waste cleanup mission as Carlsbad's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) was officially reopened for waste storage.

"Today's official reopening of WIPP is a tremendous accomplishment for the employees and members of the Carlsbad community, who play a vitally important role in our nation's security and nuclear cleanup effort. I know that many people worked long hours and extra shifts in order to see this day happen, and I couldn't be prouder of everyone for pulling together, keeping your shoulder to the wheel and never giving up. Over the last two years, I've made several visits to Carlsbad to meet with WIPP's workers and local leaders, and I've pushed hard in Washington as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee for the critical funding needed to keep the reopening on track. We've learned a number of lessons in the wake of the 2014 accident, and I urge federal officials, workers and contractors to be vigilant and maintain the highest level of transparency when it comes to the safety of the mine. I will continue to be a watchdog for the employees, community and taxpayers and ensure WIPP has the funds and oversight it needs to continue operating safely."
