Congress will soon consider legislation to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which has prohibited abusive insurance industry practices and reduced the percentage of Americans without health insurance to a record low.

It’s important to ensure that supporters of repeal understand what is at stake – like repeal of the ACA’s prohibition on benefit limits and its ban on discrimination on the basis of pre-existing conditions. Repeal of the ACA will put health insurance out of reach for many Americans, increase health care costs for others, and eliminate health care jobs.

I voted against HR 21, a sweeping GOP “message” bill that would jeopardize public health and safety in order to address a non-existent problem.

Today’s the first day of the 115th Congress. After electing the Speaker, the House will adopt its rules for the next 2 years.

It’s pretty amazing to me that one of the first actions the House GOP is taking in the new Congress is bringing up a rules package that would gut the independent House Office of Congressional Ethics and muzzle the American People’s Representatives with an unconstitutional, unnecessary punishment for exercising our right to free speech on the House Floor.

I’m very pleased that President Obama signed the 21st Century Cures Act into law today. The 21st Century Cures Act will speed up the development of new treatments for deadly diseases and increase federal funding for biomedical research in the fields of precision medicine, cancer, and the brain. It also included important mental health care reforms and authorized an additional $1 Billion for treatment of opioid addiction.

Today, President Obama will sign the Cures Act into law. These letters from Americans across the country explain why.

The House approved #KevinandAvontesLaw this morning. It’s named after two boys with autism, Kevin Curtis Wills and Avonte Oquendo, who wandered off and drowned soon afterward. Kevin and Avonte’s Law is intended to stop the tragedies that happen all too often when individuals wander away from safety. It would expand an existing program to help find missing individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease. The renamed “Missing Americans Alert Program” would provide funding to law enforceme...nt, public safety, and non-profit organizations to train first responders and communities and provide resources and technology to help find local individuals who’ve wandered away from safety, most often children with developmental disabilities and adults with dementia, before they can come to harm. As co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Autism Caucus, I’ve been very supportive of this legislation.
