On Thursday evening, President Obama signed into law legislation introduced by Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Westwood) to name the United States Post Office in Springboro, Ohio after Richard "Dick" Chenault, a diligent public servant and Springboro icon.
“Richard Chenault lived a life of service to his country and his community,” said Chabot. “Few people are as dedicated to their community as Mr. Chenault was to Springboro. He not only worked at the post office, but he also volunteered as a firefighter and police officer, helped found the Springboro Lions Club and routinely assisted elderly neighbors by shoveling snow and mowing the grass. The Richard Chenault Post Office will be an enduring reminder of everything he meant to the Springboro community, and everything the Springboro community meant to him.”
Springboro Mayor John Agenbroad added: “I can’t say enough good things about Dick Chenault. He was a Springboro legend and a personal friend. And he was also a World War II hero, for which he deserves our gratitude. I would like to thank Congressman Chabot for his leadership on this issue, as well as congratulate all those in the Springboro community who have worked so hard to achieve this well-deserved honor.”
A World War II veteran, Mr. Chenault served in the United States Army’s First Cavalry Division from 1944 to 1946. After the war, he took a job with the U.S. Postal Service where he was one of the first letter carriers for the Springboro post office. He would serve his community as an employee of the post office for the next 22 years.
Mr. Chenault was a member of the Clearcreek Township Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years, and even served as its chief for 23 of those years. He was also a part-time police officer and a charter member of the Springboro Lions Club. Mr. Chenault was adored by the Springboro community, and this legislation is intended to honor his life of service.
