Today, President Obama signed a bill coauthored by U.S. Representatives Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) and Kathy Castor (D-FL), the Safe Medications for Moms and Babies Act, that was included in the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act.

Reps. Herrera Beutler and Castor introduced the Safe Medications for Moms and Babies Act last spring to address the dangers posed to mothers and infants by the lack of research on medication taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  This bipartisan solution will identify major research gaps involving pregnant and lactating women who take prescription medication, and detail ways to promote safer medications for them to use.  More details on the bill are available here.

“Today’s signing by the president marks an important step for making medication safer for moms and babies,” said Jaime. “I’m proud that the President signed my Safe Medication for Moms and Babies Act into law today, which will make it easier for mothers to effectively manage chronic health conditions. Without reliable information, women and doctors are playing a guessing game as to the impacts of many medications. A mother shouldn’t have to choose between taking medication with an unknown effect on her and her child, or not taking it at all – and today’s bill signing will help make sure moms aren’t in that position.”
