Service Academy Nominations

Class of 2021 cycle is closed.

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Each Member may nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot alloted to our district. To request a Military Academy Nomination from our office, please complete the form below. Best wishes to you as you pursue your goal of attending one of the U.S. Service Academies and serving our country.

Service Academy Nominations

A Letter from Congressman Graves to potential applicants:

I always look forward to receiving applications from young people who are interested in attending one of our United States Military Academies. Each year I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of young people from my district to the Service Academies. I appreciate your enthusiasm and commitment to serve our great country.

If you would like to learn more about the Service Academies, I am hosting my Fall Academy Day September 17, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sonoraville High School (7340 Fairmount Hwy SE, Calhoun, GA 30701). There will be representatives from the five Service Academies, as well as cadets and midshipmen, who will share helpful information about the academies.

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements and be nominated by an authorized person, including a member of the United States House of Representatives or United States Senate.

To be eligible, you must be 17 years of age as of July 1, in the year of admission to a service academy. You must not have passed your 23rd birthday. You must be a United States citizen, unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

Those interested in applying to a service academy should complete the application through my office and provide all requested documentation. You should also begin the application process with the academies themselves. To apply through my office you must reside in the 14th Congressional district of Georgia. If you are not sure in which district you reside, please contact my office for support. In order to assist you with the nominations application process, detailed information is available below to help answer questions and provide guidance about submitting an application to my Congressional office.

Freedom First,

Congressman Tom Graves

NECESSARY ACTION TO APPLY TO A SERVICE ACADEMY

Please note that all applications for a nomination through Rep. Graves' Dalton office are due by 5:00pm on Friday, October 14, 2016.  Because there is a great deal of information required by the Service Academies for a nomination, this is not a process to be taken lightly. Please understand that no applications received after the deadline will be considered and no exceptions can be made. Therefore any delivery delays by USPS or any commercial package delivery service will not be grounds for a late submission.

Please follow the instructions carefully for completing and submitting applications to my office. Please provide an email address on your application so that an email can be sent to you confirming receipt of your completed file. If your file was incomplete, you will receive an email outlining what is missing. If you do not receive an email confirmation, contact Tracey Bartley at tracey.bartley@mail.house.gov to determine the status of your application.

SAT and ACT scores cannot be accepted after the October 14 deadline. Please take your test as early as possible, allowing time for a retest if desired. Also, on the first page of the application, you are required to list your 9 digit zip code in the information for your address. This is required for all military academies and without it, a nomination cannot be submitted.

Your 9 digit zip code can be found on the US Postal Service website at www.usps.com.

The Military Service Academy Board that I have appointed will review all applications and select candidates that will be invited to an in-person interview. This invitation will be made in late October for a November interview date. The nomination decisions will be made and announced before the end of the calendar year. Service academies will extend offers of appointments through May of the application year.

Please submit your application packets to Rep. Graves' Dalton office. If you have questions about the nominations process, please contact the Service Academy Coordinator:

You may apply online to each academy for which you have interest, and you should do so during your junior year of high school. The academies are highly selective.  All academies, other than United States Coast Guard Academy, require a nomination from a qualified nominating source in addition to meeting the individual eligibility and entrance requirements for each respective academy. Appointments to the Coast Guard Academy are made on the basis of a nationwide competition.
