Agriculture

Agriculture is the backbone of America, and Indiana has a rich agricultural history and a strong community of family farmers. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee and chair of the Nutrition Subcommittee, I am dedicated to supporting legislation that helps Hoosier farmers flourish. American agriculture feeds the world, and at a time when food insecurity is growing, we need our farmers and ranchers more than ever. I supported the five-year farm bill to provide farmers and producers with the flexibility and certainty they need to conduct business and plan for the future. Overly burdensome regulations drive up food prices, compromise food security, and often hurt more than they help. I am committed to reviewing current policies to make sure they do not hinder the growth of the agriculture industry or the safety of the American people.

Defense and National Security

With the rising threat of terrorist networks like ISIS overseas and radicalized terrorists here at home, ensuring the safety and security of the American people must be our number one priority. I am honored to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, where I am working to make sure our military has the tools and resources necessary to confront and defeat any threat. As part of my commitment to serve on behalf of Hoosiers and our servicemembers, I helped author a bipartisan law to combat military sexual assault. The United States has the most capable and best-trained fighting force in the world because of our brave military personnel and their families. It is our duty to do all we can to support them in their mission.

Economy and Jobs

As the biggest job creators in America, small businesses are key to economic growth. Unfortunately, many federal policies are standing in the way of job creation and growth. I constantly hear from Hoosiers concerned about the explosion of unworkable, overly burdensome federal regulations. In order for our nation to prosper, the federal government must get out of the way. We also need to reform our tax code and make it fairer and simpler for Hoosier small businesses and families. While Indiana was hit hard by the recession, Hoosiers are hard-working and resilient people. Our state budget is strong, and industries like manufacturing and agriculture are thriving. I am convinced that Indiana and America have a bright future ahead, and I look forward to working with you to make it a reality.

Education

One of the greatest blessings in America is the ability for anyone, no matter their economic background or family history, to work hard and succeed. As the first person in my family to attend college, I know firsthand the transformative power of education. I believe every child in America should have access to a high-quality education in a safe and welcoming environment, regardless of whether their education takes place in a public school, private school, home school, or non-traditional setting. As the wife of a school teacher, I know that our education system faces challenges. American students have been testing below their international peers, debt for college students has skyrocketed, and the federal government’s resources for education are strained. But I firmly believe America has the ability to produce the best and brightest students, from preschool through graduate school.

Energy

You and your family already pay enough for energy, which is why I oppose raising taxes on energy and fuel, and why I’ve stood up to agencies like the EPA whose regulations drive costs up. We need to repeal excessive regulations that increase the cost of energy while doing nothing to actually protect the environment. Moving America towards energy independence requires safely and efficiently utilizing a wide variety of energy sources, including oil, natural gas, nuclear energy, and renewable fuels. Hoosiers want energy policies that will bring down costs, protect our environment, and promote our national security and independence, and I will support energy policies that put the needs of American families and small businesses – not foreign companies – first.

Fiscal Responsibility

For the first time in our nation’s history, the United States has recently run multiple trillion dollar deficits. Our debt is $19 trillion and climbing each day. If our debt were divided up, each person in America would owe nearly than $60,000 – far more than the median household income in Indiana. Congress must take immediate action to reduce spending and balance our budget. The math is simple: we cannot continue to spend money we simply do not have and saddle future generations with unsustainable levels of debt. Hoosiers work hard to live within their means, and so should Congress. I am honored to have participated in Indiana’s financial turnaround during my time in the state legislature, and when I served on the House Budget Committee in the 113th Congress I brought Hoosier common sense to our nation’s budget discussions. I am committed to supporting pro-growth policies that will offer economic opportunity and eliminate the regulatory and tax burdens that restrict job growth.

Health Care

I know how important health care is to you and your family. We are fortunate to live in a country with the most advanced medical innovation and technology. My husband and I spent four years in Romania, where we started a foundation to provide medical supplies to impoverished children. Those years gave me a greater appreciation for the advancements our country has made in health care. However, I know our overall health care system is not perfect, and I've heard your concerns. That is why I am working to repeal the president’s overly burdensome and job-killing health care law and replace it with reforms that will improve access to quality health care, reduce costs, and remove burdensome government regulations that interfere with private health care decisions. As Hoosiers, we are proud to be a leader in medical innovation, with more than 300 medical device manufacturers in our state. Congress successfully delayed a provision in Obamacare that would have imposed a new 2.3 percent sales tax on medical devices. Blocking this debilitating tax will allow companies to hire workers in our community and help our seniors and veterans access the life-saving medical devices they need.

Veterans

As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I am honored and privileged to represent over 50,000 veterans in Indiana’s 2nd District. I am grateful to every Hoosier veteran, and every veteran in this country, for their selfless response to the call to serve. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, I understand the sacrifices veterans and their families make. This is why fighting for veterans is so important to me. During my time in Congress, I have worked to hold the VA accountable for its failures and to fix the VA once and for all so it works for veterans. In the wake of the VA wait times scandal, House passed my legislation to stop the VA from ignoring its own scheduling practices. My bill to protect veterans from overprescription of addictive painkillers was signed into law as part of comprehensive legislation to combat opioid abuse.
