Today, I once again requested that Speaker Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy bring H.Res.752 to the floor for a vote.

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) sent the following letter to Speaker Paul Ryan and House Majority Leader
alceehastings.house.gov

My thoughts and prayers are with Gwen Ifill’s family during this terribly sad time. As one of the most prominent African-American journalists in our country, she was truly an inspiring figure. She will be greatly missed.

I join with millions of Americans in pausing today to honor the brave men and women who have fought and died for our country, and to reflect on what their service and sacrifice means to me.

As our country marks Veterans Day, we must recognize the pressing needs of the brave servicemen and women returning home from conflicts abroad. I am so proud to represent a large veteran community in Congress, and to work day and night to improve upon the benefits available to veterans acr...oss the country.

Far too many veterans remain on the streets, and the rate of suicide amongst the veteran community remains disproportionately high. As a nation, we must ensure our veterans receive the indispensable access to affordable housing, education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and mental health services.

More than 1.5 million veterans reside in Florida. Today, as in all days, I honor their sacrifice, and the sacrifices of the millions of veterans throughout America. I look forward to continuing to work for these brave Americans in the U.S. Congress. #VeteransDay

I was deeply saddened to learn of Janet Reno's passing. She was truly a trailblazer, and as our nation’s first woman Attorney General, she served with honor, integrity and respect.

Janet Reno was recognized as one of a kind by her associates because of her ‘do the right thing’ way of thinking. She once said, ‘I hope I do the women of America proud,’ and advocated strongly for the advancement of women's rights. As Attorney General, Janet Reno implemented historic legislation s...uch as the Violence Against Women Act and the Brady background check bill, policies that have positively impacted millions of Americans and will continue to benefit generations to come.

I join with so many around the nation in mourning the loss of my friend and fellow Floridian, Janet Reno. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this time of great sadness.

What has transpired in China over the past 24 hours is outrageous and shameful - police standing by and doing absolutely nothing as they watch dog traders attack animal rescuers.

Thank you to all the brave activists on the ground who are doing everything in their power to save these innocent animals. It is time that China end its barbaric dog meat trade immediately! We must keep up this fight and never give up until the dog meat trade is ended once and for all.

And thank y...ou to CAPP activists who took this photo of what has transpired to document these horrific abuses. In Congress, I remain committed to doing all that I can to stop these practices, and will again demand that House leadership bring my resolution H.Res.752 to the floor for a vote when Congress reconvenes in November.

Today is #PreserveHBCUs Day! I am pleased to support the UNCF’s efforts to highlight Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) and the HBCU Historic Preservation Program. Congress should act to provide the necessary funding to preserve these important landmarks on HBCU campuses across the country.

Throughout October we celebrate the LGBT History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing important achievements in the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. As the fight for equality and acceptance continues, it is imperative to acknowledge the influential roles LGBT people have taken in shaping the world we live in today.

I take this time to express my gratitude for the courage and dedication of those who have fought to ensure the basic human rights of all people, and I proudly reaffirm my support for #LGBT communities across the world.

During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we highlight the painful reality of intimate partner abuse in our country. Domestic violence takes many forms: it can include emotional abuse as well as physical, psychological, and sexual violence, with the intention of intimidating, abusing, or otherwise exerting control of one intimate partner over another.

Nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute in the United States. On a typical day, m...ore than 20,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. While rates of domestic violence have dropped significantly over the past two decades, far too many women and men struggle to free themselves from abusive situations.

As we observe this month, we work to let victims know that they are not alone. I was proud to support the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in 2013, which expanded protections and services for Native Americans, immigrants, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. All people deserve to feel safe and secure, and I will continue to work in Congress to protect victims of domestic violence.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the tragic shooting death of Corey Jones by an undercover Palm Beach Gardens police officer. My thoughts and prayers are with Corey’s family and friends on this solemn occasion.

I was pleased to speak at the OIC South Florida Summit this morning. It is imperative that we protect and grow the middle class.

Once again, UNESCO must be condemned for adopting a one-sided, anti-Semitic resolution denying thousands of years of Jewish ties to Jerusalem. Jewish ties to Jerusalem are indisputable, and dangerous resolutions like this one only deepen existing divisions.

World bodies do not have the right to re-write history, and important multi-national institutions should not engage in de-legitimizing political theater. The fact that this vote was taken just hours after the conclusion o...f Yom Kippur, the most holy day in Judaism, is noteworthy.

Last month, I introduced H.Con.157, a resolution expressing the sense of Congress that the United States should continue to exercise its veto in the United Nations Security Council on resolutions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and oppose anti-Israel measures considered by the United Nations and its bodies. Today’s biased UNESCO resolution highlights why my resolution is unfortunately necessary. The United Nations and its bodies unfairly target Israel on a regular basis, whether it is the Human Rights Council naming Israel as the world’s top human rights violator, or the Commission on the Status of Women singling out Israel as the only nation responsible for women’s rights violations.

“I appreciate the United States’ representative to UNESCO, as well as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, and Estonia for voting against this resolution.
