This morning I introduced H.R. 6317, the Veteran Mental Healthcare Expansion Act of 2016, with Congressman Walter Jones of North Carolina. This bipartisan bill would provide all combat veterans, including the thousands of veterans who have other than an honorable discharges, access to a VA mental healthcare services if they had a previously diagnosed, service-connected mental health condition.

20 veterans commit suicide each day, and of those, only 6 of them are enrolled in ...the VA. Research shows that those receiving healthcare from the VA are far less likely to take their own lives than those not enrolled. I introduced this legislation in an effort to capture those remaining 14 veterans and ensure that they have access to the VA healthcare they have earned and deserve. While developing new methods to end veteran suicide and promote mental healthcare access will remain my first priority, I believe that this bill represents a meaningful step in the right direction.

I got to introduce Ulysses to Col. Bob Chisholm. One of only 325 Americans to be authorized to wear the Triple C.I.B. for combat service in three separate wars (World War II, Korea and Vietnam). I'm so proud of what he has done for this country and what he represents to this community. I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to introduce Ulysses to him. -- Benavidez Patterson All Airborne Chapter 82nd Airborne Division Association

We asked Congressman Beto O'Rourke NOT to grant the president this a...uthority, knowing full-well that an election was on the horizon with one of the most venomnous presidential candidates of our time. Instead, O'Rourke voted to grant fast-track authority to the president. Perhaps, in hind-sight O'Rourke is now regreting that close vote, but hind-sight is 2020 vision, he should realize now, that his vote proved to be the last power we would have ever wanted to hand over to Trump. People before Politics. Further, despite who you granted that authority to- Obama, Clinton or Trump- granting the president this authority is a loop-hole to avoid public scrutiny. This is not what democracy looks like. "The document notes that Congress has granted the President Trade Promotion Authority -- power for the President to get trade deals through Congress more swiftly -- until 2018 and it could be extended until 2021." • Borrowing a refrain from Nobel Laurette Bob Dylan, the times they ar...e a changing. And all the changes aren't bad. One of the things for which I am most grateful is the respect our returning veterans now enjoy. Back when I separated from active duty in 1969 vets were about as popular as the flu. If you wanted to go somewhere on Veterans Day it had better be to the VFW or American Legion because those were about the only places you would be welcome and sometimes it was a little thin there. That we old farts now share in the newfound recognition is icing on the cake. Lori and I did what has become our traditional Veteran's Day outing with lunch at Chili's on North Mesa in El Paso. As we were seated we noticed Congressman Beto O'Rourke talking with some folks near the door. I knew his late father, Pat, well back when Beto was very young and he was still quite young when I last anchored TV news in El Paso so it may have been my POW-MIA shirt and ragged old fatigue jacket which gave me away. He had slipped out before I could say hello. After we enjoyed a lovely lunch, we asked for our check. Our server then said, "Beto O'Rourke payed for your lunch but told me to wait until they had left before I told you." Thank you, Beto. Thank you very much. The times they are indeed a changing. You truly made an old vet's day. See More
