It is an honor and a privilege to be elected to serve the people of Florida’s 17th District for the next two years. I am humbled by this opportunity and am reminded of the sacred trust the people have placed in me every time I put my hand on the bible and take the oath of office.

I introduced a bill with my Florida neighbor Congressman Ted Deutch titled the Preventing Crimes Against Veterans Act, to penalize these fraudsters that are blatantly engaging in a scheme to defraud a veteran. It is our duty to ensure that our heroes are protected under every aspect of the law.

The House will be voting tonight on my and Congressman Ted Deutch's bill, the Preventing Crimes Against Veterans Act. I spoke on the House floor today in support of my bill and I am confident that my colleagues will join us in helping protect our veterans from individuals that make a living off of scheming them out of their benefits.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the horrific events that unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning in Orlando Florida. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the family and friends who lost loved ones in this tragedy. To all that were injured, we’re all pulling for you that you make fast and full recoveries. While the FBI is still investigating this, the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, we do know that this was an act of radical Islamic terrorism. Nothing scares me more than the thought of American born United States citizens, growing up in this country, becoming radicalized and then carrying out acts of terror. That is what happened right in our back yards last weekend. These mass killings of innocent people cannot be stopped by half-measures. Terror groups like ISIS and al Qaeda cannot be reasoned with or moderated, and co-existence with them is impossible. The only way to guarantee our security is to eliminate their entire organizations and expel them from the safe havens in which they operate. Tolerating periodic mass attacks on American and allied civilians is simply not an option – and we need to work together to put an end to this violence.

Yesterday, I sent a letter to The Weather Channel in regards to their recently-released article and documentary “Toxic Lake.” While I’m pleased that the Weather Channel is drawing more attention to the struggles surrounding the Lake, I strongly disagree with their one-sided reporting on this complicated and years-long issue.
