Offices Used by Speakers of the House
Beginning
with the first Speaker, Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania, 54
individuals have wielded the gavel, including Henry
Clay of Kentucky, Thomas Brackett Reed of Maine, Joseph
Cannon of Illinois, and Samuel
Rayburn of Texas. 18 have been assigned rooms in the House Office Buildings
during their long careers.
The chart below lists the offices that Speakers have used during their House
service. Joseph Warren Keifer of Ohio was the first
Speaker to occupy a room in the House's office buildings. Keifer served for a
single term as Speaker in the 47th Congress (1881–1883), long before separate
offices for Members of Congress were considered. When he returned to House
service from 1905 to 1911, he was part of the first wave of Members to move
into the Cannon building. Although the Cannon building’s namesake, Joseph Cannon,
was Speaker when the first office building was built in 1908, he never occupied
one of its rooms, preferring his Capitol offices even after he left the
Speakership in 1911. Since the 1970s, Members who have ascended to the
Speakership have continued to maintain Member offices in the office buildings,
in addition to their official and ceremonial Speakers’ rooms in the
Capitol, the better to provide direct service to constituents. Office
assignments provided are the numbers currently used for a given room.
