Dear Friend,

I reached a milestone this week when I visited Wayzata High School to meet with and talk to students. It was my 200th school visit and another opportunity to talk with bright students about public service and my work in Congress. Channel 12 covered my visit and highlighted my anti-trafficking legislation that was signed into law and now is literally saving lives. Watch that video here.

I also heard from a number of you during my recent telephone town hall meeting and at my "Congress on Your Corner" events in Chanhassen and Champlin. Thanks to everyone for participating!

Here are the results from the survey question that was asked during the telephone town hall: "The Administration is planning to lift economic sanctions on Iran, providing them with more than $100 billion in economic relief. Before sanctions are lifted, should Iran first be required to pay restitution to victims of terrorism from court-ordered judgements similar to what Libya was required to do before their sanctions were lifted?" The results to survey question are below.

I recently supported bipartisan legislation that would require Iran to compensate victims and pay judgements before they are given economic relief.

Have a great week and if I can be of help to you or your family, please give my office a call. Join the conversation online by visiting my websiteFacebook pageTwitterInstagram, and please watch my latest Erik's Correspondence Corner video.

Sincerely,

Erik Paulsen
Member of Congress

Honoring Those Who Keep Us Safe

A few months ago, the President signed legislation I authored that supports the families of our nation's police officers, firefighters, and EMT's. The law, the Don't Tax Our Fallen Public Safety Officers Act, clarifies that death benefits for these public servants that give their life in the line of duty cannot be taxed. This week, I received what is referred to as a redline copy of that law

Tragically, we were reminded of the dangers that law enforcement faces every day when Aitkin County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Sandberg was murdered recently. Our hearts ache for Deputy Sandberg's family and the entire community of Aitkin County for their loss. I spoke on the House floor in remembrance of Steven's legacy and to honor his sacrifice.

Increasing Transparency at the VA

While Congress has taken action to increase efficiency and care at the VA, a lack of transparency still makes it difficult to determine what additional actions need to be taken to fix the problems at the agency. For instance, over the last decade, 140 Inspector General investigations have been shelved without a report being made available to Congress or the public. The information from these investigations would be helpful for the VA Committees in Congress and the public to be able to conduct appropriate oversight of the agency.

I'm supporting bipartisan legislation, the Veterans Care and Reporting Enforcement Act that will require reports from investigations to be made public on the VA website and sent to Congress. This bill, introduced by Minnesota Reps. Tom Emmer and Tim Walz will help provide critical information as we work to ensure our veterans have access to timely and effective care.

Supporting Hospice and Palliative Care

One of the most difficult times for any family is when a loved one is in pain with a serious disease or illness. While this experience is obviously difficult and emotional for those involved, it's often confusing as well. Often, it's not clear what options are available with regards to palliative care -- healthcare that helps provide relief from the pain, symptoms, and stress of a serious disease. For instance, hospice care can help provide valuable support and care for family members.

The problem is a lack of education and an inadequate number of doctors and providers in these fields. Currently, there is an estimated shortage of 18,000 doctors in the palliative care field. I'm supporting legislation, the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act, that enhances the training and education of health professionals in palliative care, facilitates more federal research, and establishes a national palliative care education and awareness campaign. In addition, it directs the National Institute of Health to develop and institute a national policy to expand palliative care research programs. Patients and their families should have all the tools available when facing a serious illness and that means building a robust palliative and hospice care system.
