Lujan to Volunteer at Bienvenidos Food Pantry in Santa Fe on Wednesday

Santa Fe, NM – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District will visit the Bienvenidos Food Pantry on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Luján, who has fought to ensure food security in New Mexico, will tour the food bank and help sort donations.

Sadly, New Mexico leads the nation in childhood hunger; 27% of children in the state live in households without constant access to food. In New Mexico, over 358,700 people are at-risk for hunger. For those struggling with hunger, it is very challenging to thrive: a hungry child will struggle to focus and learn in class, and a worker will struggle to be at his or her best on the job. In Congress, Congressman Luján supports nutrition programs that help hard-working families put food on the table. He has urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) commodities to food banks, fought to ensure Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits make it to New Mexicans, and worked to stop misguided changes to our nation’s child nutrition programs.

During the visit, Luján will meet with staff at the food bank to discuss the impact cuts to nutritional programs could have on their efforts to provide food to New Mexicans at risk of going hungry.
