Rep. Davis Supports Diplomatic Relations with Cuba

Congressman Danny K. Davis, having just returned Tuesday, December 16, 2014, from a visit to Cuba with a delegation of Members of Congress and health professionals to study advances in the treatment of diabetes in Cuba, today announced his support for the President’s actions to reestablish diplomatic relations with Cuba and to expand people-to-people, cultural, travel opportunities and create new opportunities for economic exchange between our two nations.

Davis stated, “I applaud the initiative President Obama announced on Wednesday to begin the normalization of relations between the United States and Cuba commencing with the reestablishment of diplomatic relations. Relations between our nations have been mired in an outdated and ineffective remnant of cold war policy for more than fifty years. The effects of our policy have not served the interests of the American people nor the Cuban people. It is time to move on to policies which will enhance healthy, vigorous social, cultural, educational, scientific, economic and people-to-people exchanges between our two nations – a relationship respectful of our differences while committed to strengthening our common interests and the best features of our cultures. I believe the American people, the people of Illinois and the people of the 7th Congressional District welcome this new beginning and will share in its benefits. I look forward to the Congress participating in the ongoing discussion in the coming days of how to move legislation to reshape that relationship in a positive direction, mutually beneficial to our peoples and our nations.”
