Academy Nominations

My office offers information on Academy Nominations for students from the Third District who are applying to our nation's Military Service academies.

The U.S. Service Academies provide a first-rate education, and teach the leadership, discipline and communication skills necessary to become an officer in our nation's military.  The education attained and the skills learned are also invaluable in a limitless number of career pursuits and mold the students into leaders throughout their lives. Graduation from the Service Academies ensures a successful future for the young men and women who attend, both for those who pursue a career in the military and for those who enter the job market after fulfilling their service obligations.

Appointment to the United States Air Force, Naval, Military, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine Academies is a highly competitive process, with only a select number of students nationwide admitted to the Academies each year.

To learn more about the application process, please call Ken Christopher in my Lowell office at 978-459-0101.

The Application Process

Each year I have the honor and privilege of nominating a select group of young men and women from the Third Congressional District of Massachusetts to our nation's service academies.  These individuals who apply to the academies understand the importance of the institution as well as service to our country.   Not only is it an education at a first rate university, but it is also first hand experience and training for a career in the armed forces.

Interested applicants must follow a twofold process to apply to a service academy. An applicant must apply for a nomination through my office, and must also contact the academy that they are interested in attending and open a file.  I encourage all interested applicants to contact the academies as early as possible and schedule a visit. The Coast Guard Academy is the only institution that does not require a nomination from a Member of Congress.

Once a completed nomination application is received in my office it will be reviewed by the Academy Selection Advisory Board, which is a group of appointed members of the Third Congressional District.  The board is comprised of alumni of a service academy, parents of current students and community leaders who all understand the importance of the academies and the qualifications desired.  After a review process, applicants will be notified if they have qualified for an interview with the panel that will occur over two Saturdays in December.

I will nominate 10 qualified individuals based on the Board's recommendations for each spot available to the District, of which there is typically one per year.  A nomination does not guarantee admission, but is required for your application to be considered by the academy.  Due to the competitive nature of this process, I encourage applicants to apply for a nomination with Senators Warren and Markey, and Vice President Biden as well.
