The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is an independent agency of the United States Government and manages many aspects of the civilian federal workforce including setting policy on government hiring procedures, management of federal job announcement postings, conducting background checks and processing security clearance applications, management of pension benefits for federal retirees and their families, and administration of other insurance programs for federal employees and retirees.
