Grijalva (D-AZ) responded today to the death of a 36-year-old woman being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at Eloy Detention Center, a for-profit detention center in Arizona. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Ryan Costello (PA-06) today introduced the Traveling Exotic Animal & Public Safety Protection Act, legislation that would prohibittraveling circuses from holding exotic animals such as lions, tigers and elephants in captivity. Studies over the past 20 years have shown that the mobile accommodations circuses rely on cannot provide animals with the facilities needed to maintain their health and welfare.     Washington, D.C. – President Obama should take concrete steps to reduce the tensions at the Dakota Access Pipeline, argued Representatives Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), Jared Huffman (D-CA), and 21 members of Congress today in a letter to the White House. The lawmakers recommend that the federal government deny the easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross Lake Oahe, deploy observers to ensure water protectors and journalists are safe and their rights are upheld, and urge the state of North Dakota to stand down from its escalation of the use of force. The letter follows today's announcement by the Army Corps of Engineers that the agency will continue consultations with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe before making a final decision on the fate of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline.

  • Grijalva Requests Official Action from Republican Chairman to Prevent Cherrybell Closure

    TUCSON – Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) today sent a letter to Chairman Mark Meadows (R-NC) of the House Subcommittee on Government Operation – which holds jurisdiction over the United States Postal Service (USPS) – asking him to officially announce his support for ongoing efforts to save the Cherrybell Processing Center in Tucson. The letter follows Chairman Meadows' tour of the facility last week, where he heard from local elected officials and community leaders about the importance of protecting the facility. While local officials from both political parties released statements following the visit expressing optimism about keeping the facility open, the Chairman has yet to officially commit to supporting legislative language that will prevent the consolidation.
