Congressman Connolly has been a strong supporter of common-sense gun safety legislation and believes that upholding the 2nd Amendment does not have to come at the expense of public safety. In Congress, he is an original cosponsor of the Gun Violence Research Act, which would allow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct high-quality, peer-reviewed research on gun violence. He has advocated for the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban and limits on large-capacity ammunition magazines. He supports expanding background checks and closing the gun-show loophole, as well as preventing suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms. He also supports a repeal of the federal restrictions that prevent local law enforcement officials from accessing criminal gun trace information that is necessary to conduct gun crime investigations and dismantle illegal gun trafficking networks.

Following the tragic shooting at Pulse Night Club in Orlando, Congressman Connolly joined his Democratic colleagues to implore the Republican majority to bring a bill preventing terrorists from obtaining firearms to the House Floor for a vote. When Republicans refused, Congressman Connolly and his colleagues staged an unprecedented sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives for more than 25 hours. He will continue to push for sensible gun safety measures.
