Internships

Our office tries to expose interns to as many aspects of Congressional work as possible. Internships are available in both our Washington and District offices throughout the fall, spring, or summer semesters. All internships are solely available for college students gaining credit through an official university internship program, which should be set up in advance through their college.

Internships are unpaid but students gain invaluable work experience, including research projects, drafting of correspondence, and coordination with other congressional offices. Administrative duties are an essential part of an intern's duties. Answering telephones, opening and distributing mail, and filing are among the typical tasks assigned.  Washington interns observe first-hand the workings of Congress and see the legislative process from the inside, while District interns have the opportunity of interacting with the Congressman and his constituents and participating in special projects in the district.  Each location offers its own unique educational experience:

Washington, D.C.

In Washington, interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a Congressional office.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Houston, Texas

In my Texas office, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. Congressional district offices also act as a liaison for constituents in dealing with federal agencies so interns may be assigned to assist in various constituent casework or work on District-based projects of importance.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
