Congressman Hoyer has been a strong advocate for our veterans, and has worked tirelessly to ensure that America’s veterans receive the respect, care and benefits they earned through their service to our nation. Congressman Hoyer has strongly supported the historic increases in funding for the Veterans Administration, improving the quality and efficiency of care in our nation’s VA facilities. 

He also worked to pass the historic GI Bill for the 21st Century, which will provide the estimated 2.1 million members of the military who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001 with up to four years of education benefits.

Congressman Hoyer is working with the Department of Veterans Affairs Baltimore Regional Office on improving the claims process for Maryland veterans to ensure they receive their benefits in a timely manner and with fewer errors.  He has worked with Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, leadership from the Baltimore Regional Office,  the entire Maryland Congressional Delegation,  and others to take steps toward eliminating the unacceptably high backlog.

He is also dedicated to eliminating homelessness among veterans. He worked to secure funding to assist nearly 200 veteran families who are homeless or at risk for homelessness in St. Mary's, Charles, and Calvert Counties. Additionally, he joined the Tri-County Council of Southern Maryland and other stakeholders to ensure an accurate count of the homeless population in the Fifth District, which was critical to receiving additional housing vouchers for homeless veterans.

Congressman Hoyer takes great pride in being one of the original sponsors of the legislation that created the Veterans History Project that collects the stories of veterans for future generations to hear.

Congressman Hoyer encourages constituents who are having trouble with VA disability claims to contact his district offices in Greenbelt and Waldorf with questions regarding casework. In addition, veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses looking for work are encouraged to visit the new Veterans Employment Center, which connects job-seekers with a Veterans Job Bank that includes public and private sector job opportunities, as well as resume building and other career tools, in one location.
