Dear Friend,

                Today, we celebrate the achievements of the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. Mandela is a passionate advocate for civil rights whose dedication helped transform the attitudes and actions of an entire country and set a precedent for change that has left a lasting legacy in halls of justice and in institutions all across the country and the world from South Africa to Louisiana’s own Southern University. He was the first black South African to hold the office of President, and in retirement, he continues to engage in social activism. Like Mandela, I too believe in the importance of ensuring human rights for all people, and every day I fight to equalize the unfair conditions that plague those who are less fortunate in communities across the country and especially in Louisiana.

                Mandela Day was founded to not only celebrate the legacy of this great leader, but also to ignite the spirit of service in each of us.  As we celebrate Mandela’s 95^th birthday today, I urge you to recognize the importance of giving back to your community by dedicating a part of your day to performing service. An act of kindness has a significant impact on those around you regardless of its size. Whether it’s making a new friend, volunteering at a food bank, tutoring children, or cleaning up trash in your neighborhood, no effort is too great or small.

                Nelson Mandela understood the importance of taking the initiative to improve his community. Despite over two decades of unjust imprisonment, Mandela’s life teaches us that we can overcome any obstacle when we are focused on uplifting and serving others.  For 67 years, Mandela has shown through his sacrifice and dedication that one man can make a difference. I believe you can make a difference too.
