Congresswoman Jenkins visiting Jirak Family Farms in Atchison.
Growing up on a family dairy farm outside of Holton, I saw first-hand the benefits and challenges of rural life. Agriculture has undergone many changes since I rode in the tractor with my Dad, and it is important our policies reflect a growing and dynamic industry. Representing the interests of agricultural producers is a responsibility I take very seriously.
Farmers and ranchers in the Second District help produce the safest and most abundant food supply in the world. It is important that they have fair and predictable farm programs that provide a strong safety net under them. I am proud of the contributions of our farmers and ranchers to their local, state, and national economies. In 2013 in Kansas, field crop receipts totaled more than $6.6 billion, and livestock and animal products totaled more than $8.9 billion. Agriculture is also directly responsible for nearly 1 in 5 jobs in the state.
The challenges facing farmers and ranchers are many, ranging from tax issues and environmental regulation to volatile markets and a shrinking number of young people returning to production agriculture. I am committed to supporting the agriculture industry so that we are able to produce a safe and abundant food and fiber supply here at home.
