Fifty years ago today, President Johnson fulfilled the promise of his predecessor, President John F. Kennedy, by affording every American equal protection under the law. Discrimination and segregation in the workplace, schools, housing, voting sites and other public locations became illegal, and Freedom Summer continued, despite the deaths of Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner. Yet, we still have to fight for full implementation of the law and against disparities that negatively impact minorities, such as the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Shelby v. Holder to strike down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement regarding two U.S. Supreme Court decisions issued today. Burwell v. Hobby Lobby determined certain corporate CEOs are not required to provide employees contraceptive coverage as part of their health plan under the Affordable Care Act. Harris v. Quinn decided who could be required to pay agency fees to public sector unions: "The Burwell v. Hobby Lobby ruling is extremely disappointing. The Supreme Court decided that certain owners of for-profit companies can choose which laws to obey and deny coverage of certain health benefits, hampering women's ability to exercise their reproductive rights. This decision implies that corporations are indeed people and the religious views of certain corporate CEOs are more important than the beliefs and personal health care decisions of their female employees.

Congresswoman Marcia L. The presentation of evidence by the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor to a grand jury relating to criminal charges is one step in a lengthy legal process. No one is above the law. I look forward to the process in the courts continuing and upholding the principal that anyone who breaks the law will be held accountable.
Further, the U.S. Department of Justice review requested by my office of the Cleveland Division of Police use of deadly force and pursuit policies is ongoing. Our community has been patient. Some changes have already been implemented but clearly, more must also be done administratively to ensure that another tragic incident such as this will never occur again."

The budget agreement calls on future federal employees to bear the brunt of producing budget savings and misses out on a pivotal opportunity to extend federal emergency unemployment assistance. First, it was the voter ID regulation estimated to block 890,000 Ohioans, including significant numbers of African Americans and people older than 65, from voting. The most recent legislation limiting the voting period is clearly aimed at disenfranchising college students and poor people, groups who have historically voted Democratic and would be more likely to live further from an established residence."

If confirmed, Judge Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice in 100 years, and more overall judicial experience than anyone confirmed to the Court in the past 70 years. She has been a big-city prosecutor and a corporate litigator, a federal trial judge on the U.S. District Court, and an appellate judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Moreover, Judge Sotomayor's brilliant legal analyses demonstrate a common sense understanding of the practical applications of the law. All of these attributes, combined with her reverence for the ideals of our nation's Constitution, make her an excellent nominee."
