Nevada Native Nations Land Act

H.R. 2733, the Nevada Native Nations Land Act, is a bill that would allow public land to be held in trust for six different tribes throughout Nevada. This legislation balances the unique needs of our Nevada tribal nations with those of other local ranchers, land owners, and businesses. These lands will enable the tribes to chart brighter futures for their community and preserve their cultural heritage and traditions.

Background:

H.R. 2455, the Nevada Native Nations Land Act, was originally introduced on June 6, 2013, was adopted by the House Natural Resources Committee under unanimous consent and first passed the House of Representatives in the 113th Congress on December 1, 2014 by voice vote.

In the 114th Congress, I reintroduced the Nevada Native Nations Land act as H.R. 2733 on June 11, 2015. On March 16, 2016, my bill again passed out of the House Natural Resources Committee under unanimous consent. The Senate passed their version of the bill (S.1436) out of the Indian Affairs Committee on February 29, 2016. It was agreed to in the Senate under unanimous consent and passed on April 14, 2016.

Setting the Record Straight:

After 35 months of an open and transparent process, the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) issued several legislative action alerts, beginning on April 27, 2016, opposing H.R. 2733 after its companion bill passed the Senate. Not only did they not have the courtesy to contact my office to discuss their concerns with the bill before sending the alert to every Member of Congress except for myself, but the alerts were baseless inaccuracies not grounded in reality.

It's even more troubling the AMA did all this – especially after they endorsed an identical bill (H.R. 2455) that passed the House in 2014:

It’s acceptable to change a position on a bill, but it is certainly not acceptable to attack the bill’s sponsor with baseless claims because an organization changes their position.
