About The District

Nevada’s Second Congressional District includes most of Lyon County, all of Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Pershing, Storey and Washoe counties, as well as the state capital, Carson City.

Reno, the county seat of Washoe County and the fourth biggest city in Nevada, is the largest city in NV-2.

The majority of constituents in NV-2 live in Western Nevada, including Washoe County, Carson City and the Carson Valley. The region is the second most populous in Nevada, with 615,000 residents, including Lyon and Churchill counties. It is also the historic population center of Nevada, with the state capital in Carson City, the University of Nevada in Reno and several state historic parks, including Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa.

Nevada is known as the Silver State, but did you know that NV-2 also mines nearly 80% of all the gold in the United States, making it the fourth largest gold producer in the world?

NV-2 has a long history of mineral and metal mining dating back to the 1850's. And while it's seen significant changes over the years, the importance of mining to the district's economy has remained constant.

Geologically, NV-2 is one of the most unique places on earth. It's rich in minerals such as copper, barite, molybdenum, clay, silica and lithium.

More than 14,000 Nevadans are directly employed by the mining industry, predominantly in rural NV-2. That number jumps to 50,000 when you consider indirect jobs.

As a result, unemployment is significantly lower in mining communities, such as Elko and Winnemucca, compared to the rest of the state. Mining jobs are also some of the highest paid in the state, with salaries averaging nearly $82,000.

As the industry continues to grow, cutting edge technology has made mining cleaner, safer and more environmentally responsible. And NV-2 is a world-leader in this area.
