Congresswoman Louise Slaughter

Representing the 25th District of New York

Share your story about health care reform

Just a few years ago, affordable, quality health care was out of reach for millions of Americans. Many people lived in fear of being one illness away from losing their home and everything they owned or that they would not be able to obtain coverage because of a pre-existing condition. That changed dramatically with the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, a bill I brought to the floor of the House of Representatives as Chairwoman of the Rules Committee in 2009. With this law, millions of people nationwide have finally been able to access health care and millions more have seen substantially improved coverage. The impact on New Yorkers alone has been staggering: an estimated 47,000 young adults have been able to stay on their parents health care plan up to age 26; more than 6 million people no longer have to deal with annual lifetime caps that used to limit their coverage just when they needed it the most; and more than 8 million people have been able to access preventative care like flu shots and cancer screenings at no cost. As a result of the Affordable Care Act, our nation’s uninsured rate is now at its lowest level in more than 50 years.

But this progress is now at risk with President-elect Trump and Republican leaders in Congress vowing to repeal this groundbreaking reform law as quickly as possible during the 115th Congress. I know many of you are deeply alarmed, and I share your concerns. I don’t want the lobbyists or spin from the industry to drown out your voices during this fight. I want to hear directly from my constituents about how the Affordable Care Act has helped you finally access the health care you need and deserve. Your stories will be critical as I fight on your behalf in Congress. Please take a moment and tell me how health care reform has impacted you and your family.
