National Defense

There can be no doubt that radical terrorism remains the most immediate threat to our national security today. The numerous atrocities perpetrated by radical terrorists against our citizens and allies are reminders that terrorists continue to seek the destruction of the United States and its global partners. This targeting and killing of innocent men, women, and children cannot be tolerated. That’s why I believe that the United States must play a proactive role in dealing with threats before they occur on our soil, and serve as a leader in the international fight against terror. Put simply: we must eliminate terrorists wherever they are, and remove these cowardly murderers from the face of the earth. 

As a member of the subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities on HASC, I support efforts in Congress to develop new technologies and training programs that will prepare our warfighters for future challenges to our country’s physical and cyber security, such as those posed by the aggressive actions of countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. While these nations, as well as others, have continued advancing more sophisticated threats, please be assured that I am committed to making sure that our military is ready and able to protect against them.    

In order to guarantee that the American taxpayers get the most defense capabilities for their dollar, I work to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) each year. This important legislation, which provides funding for the Department of Defense, cuts waste, reallocates resources for 21st century threats, and makes long-needed reforms to our armed forces. 

Additionally, as a senior member of HASC, I have the opportunity to provide an early voice for the 9th Congressional District in crafting this legislative package. In order to prevent cuts to the Letterkenny Army Depot in Franklin County, I have helped ensure no language in the legislation could authorize a new Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), which could otherwise lead to the loss of important jobs and defense infrastructure in our area.

The balance between protecting our nation, safeguarding civil liberties, and representing the many priorities of the citizens of Pennsylvania’s 9th District is a challenge that requires thorough consideration. I’m honored to be a part of these critical decisions, and will continue to represent proudly in Congress the security needs of my constituents and all Americans.
