It is my absolute privilege to serve the people of Michigan. I am fortunate to have been able to help pass legislation, procure funding, and take actions – both this Congress as well as in prior years – benefitting many important and worthy causes in the 13th District. These include the Hardest Hit Fund, helping to save the IRS office in Detroit this Congress, and working to bring the first Patent and Trademark satellite office to Detroit in 2012. I recognize that much work remains to be done, and I look forward to continuing to fight for jobs, justice and peace. Take a look at my "Record of Progress" report below. Your vote and voice matters. Voting is a fundamental pillar of our democracy. Exercise your right to vote today! We've come too far.
For eight years I worked with Janet Reno and for many more she remained a great friend. Janet broke barriers as the first woman to serve our nation as U.S. Attorney General. Throughout her career, she served our country with distinction and integrity. Under her leadership, the U.S. Department of Justice implemented landmark legislation such as the Violence Against Women Act, Pattern and Practice legislation, the Motor Voter Act and other important matters. Her work in the U.S. Department of Justice was not only important, but long lasting.

Voting is a fundamental pillar of our democracy. Since the 2013 Supreme Court decision struck a blow to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, I've been pushing for the legislation to be fully restored and strenthegned. However, in the years prior, I introduced legislation to make Election Day a national holiday. I still stand by this idea and shared my thoughts on it with the The New York Times. More here:

Reps. Elijah E. Cummings, John Conyers, Jr., Eliot L. Engel, and Bennie G. Thompson issued the following statement in response to evidence that the Trump campai...gn knew months beforehand about the hacking of emails from the account of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta: “Troubling new evidence appears to show that the Trump campaign not only was aware of cyber attacks against Secretary Clinton’s campaign chairman, but was openly bragging about it as far back as August. For months, we have been asking the FBI to examine links between the Trump campaign and illegal Russian efforts to affect our election, including interviewing Trump advisor Roger Stone. In light of this new evidence—and these exceptional circumstances—we call on the FBI to fully investigate and explain to the American people what steps it is taking to disrupt this ongoing criminal activity. Elections are the bedrock of our nation’s democracy and a model we hold out to the world, so we must counter any foreign or domestic efforts to threaten the integrity of our electoral process.” More here:

The DOJ announced they will start collecting data on use of force by law enforcement. As a longtime proponent of policing reform, I understand the importance that data collection plays as a tool for law enforcement accountability. Data collection is the foundation for accountability management and will help ensure that law enforcement officers can implement best practices to address accountability issues that have been at the center of protests for the past several years. Thi...s is a major step in the right direction, but there is more we need to do at the federal level to ensure comprehensive nationwide data collection as we seek to reform our current system of policing. I look forward to building upon the Department of Justice’s efforts as we work in a bipartisan fashion to strengthen a version of the Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act which is currently pending before the Committee. http://www.nytimes.com/…/justice-department-track-police-sh…

Yesterday, the Justice Department announced more than $2 million in federal funding for Detroit and Melvindale police departments. It is particularly important during times of budget constraints on local governments that the federal government provide the resources needed to help make our communities safer while encouraging the use of policing methods that build trust and positively engage our citizens. I have supported the COPS program from its inception in 1994 during the Presidency of Bill Clinton and will continue to fight for funding that supports our local officers and the communities they are sworn to protect and serve. For far too long, the people of Flint have suffered without access to clean water. In the eleventh hour, my House colleagues finally have come together in a bipartisan fashion to pass a bill that includes much needed funding for the people of Flint. This critical funding is a major step in the right direction to ensure Flint’s water is safe. I thank my colleague Congressman Dan Kildee for his leadership in this effort and I’m honored to have worked with him and other Members ...of the Michigan Congressional delegation to advocate for the people of Flint. I am hopeful that this legislation will make it to the President's desk. Much more remains to be done in the pursuit of justice for Flint residents and to ensure no other community suffers from the actions of unaccountable political appointees that they did not elect. I will continue to monitor the situation in Flint in the months and years ahead. http://www.detroitnews.com/…/house-deal-flint-shu…/91211620/

Clean drinking water is a basic human right! Thanks #HazelJuco for making sure your peers have access to safe, clean water. #IStandWithHazel
I also commend the Superintendent of Wayne-Westland Community Schools, Dr. Harmala, for doing the right thing and working to make sure this unwarranted suspension is expunged from her school record.
Hazel Juco, a senior at John Glenn High School in Westland, Michigan, was suspended because the school has a rule that prohibits the use of cell phones inside restrooms. http://on.hln.tv/6181BCYfR
I formed the Full Employment Caucus to ensure employment for every American that wants to work. One of our top priorities has been urging the Federal Reserve to not raise rates until the unemployment rate falls to 4 percent for all races. I hope the Federal Reserve leadership will agree that the wishes of Wall Street bankers should not come before the needs of tens of millions of American workers and jobseekers. Last week, I joined my Congressional Black Caucus colleagues in delivering a letter to the U.S. Department of Jusice expressing our concerns over recent shootings in #Charlotte and #Tulsa . The sad truth about these kinds of incidents is that their root causes are tied together with societal racism that brand black citizens as predators and police practices that treat them as potential perpetrators - breeding distrust between law-enforcement and communities. We need to ease racial tension in America by rebuilding our communities in a balanced way where everyone receives equal protection, job opportunities, and a fair shot at the American Dream.
I joined with my Congressional Black Caucus colleagues to demand Flint funding from our Republican leadership. More here: http://www.thehill.com/…/297532-black-caucus-demands-flint-…
