Representing the 13th District of Michigan

Seniors

The contributions of seniors to our communities and economy are immeasurable. It is important to protect the benefits these seniors have earned by working hard and paying taxes their whole lives.

I have done my best to keep my colleagues here in Congress from making damaging or arbitrary cuts to Social Security.

As a proud fighter for Social Security and Medicare, I sponsored H. Con Res. 72 which states that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits should not be cut as part of any deal to reduce the deficit.  I have collaborated with Social Security organizations, fellow members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and other members of congress to further ensure that the benefits promised to seniors are not cut or privatized.  Earlier this year I worked alongside Senator Bernie Sanders, leading a letter to President Obama that called on the administration to discuss the expansion of Social Security.

Social Security and Medicare have long received bipartisan support as they provide seniors with a well-deserved safety net of retirement income and healthcare. Seniors generally rely on Social Security as a primary source of income, using it to keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables.  I will continue to champion these issues, fighting to both protect and expand the benefits that Social Security and Medicare provide.
