Local Issues

Detroit is Motor City, which means that the quality of nation’s infrastructure has an outsized effect on our economy.  Improving the quality of our roads and increasing access to public transportation are two of my biggest priorities.  I want Detroiters to spend less time traveling to and from work and school, so that they can spend more time with their families and their community.

Our transportation policy should be environmentally friendly, well-designed to protect communities and facilitate their growth, and above all, capable of making the United States once again the world’s best place to invest.  For too many years, Congress has relied upon short-term fixes to our transportation priorities.  The failure to pass long-term authorizations and appropriations makes our projects more expensive and less effective.  It is time for Congress to act—and I stand ready and willing to work with anyone to make this happen.

March 17, 2016 Press Release
"We cannot undo the damage already done by the lead-poisoned water in Flint or fix the harm already caused by the hazardous conditions in Detroit’s public schools. But we can stand together and make sure the unaccountable emergency managers responsible for these disasters – and the legal system that empowered them – are not permitted to inflict further harm on our citizens or our constitutional rights. That’s why I’m proud to introduce the Emergency Financial Manager Reform Act of 2016, legislation that will ensure that only lawmakers elected by the people are in charge of making decisions for the people."
