Detroit is Motor City, which means that the quality of nation’s infrastructure has an outsized effect on our economy. Improving the quality of our roads and increasing access to public transportation are two of my biggest priorities. I want Detroiters to spend less time traveling to and from work and school, so that they can spend more time with their families and their community.
Our transportation policy should be environmentally friendly, well-designed to protect communities and facilitate their growth, and above all, capable of making the United States once again the world’s best place to invest. For too many years, Congress has relied upon short-term fixes to our transportation priorities. The failure to pass long-term authorizations and appropriations makes our projects more expensive and less effective. It is time for Congress to act—and I stand ready and willing to work with anyone to make this happen.

Michigan – U.S. House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) and Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today led a letter signed by every Democratic House member of Michigan’s congressional delegation, calling for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to review the State of Michigan’s actions to block the City of Flint from suing the State in connection with the Flint Water Crisis.
Detroit, MI – House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) today announced more than $2 million in federal funding for police departments in Detroit and Melvindale. The federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Hiring Program (CHP) and will be used to hire law enforcement officers, and to enhance community policing and crime prevention efforts.
Washington, D.C. — Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) today introduced the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity and Reliability (WATER) Act. This legislation would provide nearly $35 billion annually to modernize U.S. water infrastructure. The WATER Act funds infrastructure projects by closing a loophole on offshore corporate profits. The WATER Act would make these profits subject to U.S. tax in the year they are generated and ensure that all funds would go to publicly-owned water systems, rather than for-profit providers.

Washington, D.C. – Committee on the Judiciary Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) and Committee on Education and the Workforce Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) unveiled the findings of a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on actions needed to reduce racial and socioeconomic segregation, and address disparities in K-12 public schools. Ranking Members Conyers and Scott, along with retired Congressman and former Ranking Member George Miller, first requested this report in May 2014.
DETROIT – Yesterday, the Michigan House of Representatives introduced a package of bills that is intended to fix the financial problems being faced by Detroit Public Schools. WASHINGTON – The U.S. Treasury Department announced today that it will allocate an additional $188 million in Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds to the Hardest Hit Fund (HHF) program in the second phase of funding. The additional funding into the HHF program, which is the result of recent bipartisan cooperation in Congress, will assist homeowners who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads and help stabilize impoverished neighborhoods.
