Education and Student Loans

I fiercely believe that there is no better way to improve our society than through investments in education.   Improvements in education pay quick and large dividends; failure in education loads debt onto ourselves and the next generation through lost opportunity and wasted potential.

As Detroiters, we need to support programs that will help our schools once again graduate students, on time, who are ready to go on to college or learn a trade.  That is why my educational priority in Congress is to create cost-effective and high-quality instruction for K-12 students, students learning a vocation, and those who go onto college and beyond.

Our education needs to begin early to ensure every child starts the race of life from the same line.  We need to have heavy investments that keep students performing at grade level throughout their education, and that responds to a child’s falling behind with overwhelming support and access to remedial programs.  That should continue throughout school—we should never accept a minimal education in the place of a proper education.

After our children graduate from high school, they should be prepared to either work or continue their education.  That means that every child should have a chance to take practical courses and begin a vocational track while they are in school.  The opportunities available to trained tradesmen are often better than those positions available to recent graduates with a baccalaureate degree.

Those who go onto college should not be saddled for life with unpayable debts.  America needs to do a better job of creating a talented workforce for the future, and we cannot do that when the cost of gaining those tools discourages some of our most talented young leaders.
