Committee
In 2007, Congressman Conyers became the first African-American to serve as Chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary. The committee serves an important role as it has jurisdiction over any legislation that carries a possibility for criminal or civil penalties. Congressman Conyers served as Chairman from 2007-2011, and is currently the Ranking Member.
The committee is commonly referred to as the lawyer for the House of Representatives because of its jurisdiction over matters related to the administration of justice in federal courts, administrative bodies, and law enforcement agencies, such as the Department of Justice. The committee also has jurisdiction over issues such as consumer protection, copyright, civil rights, consumer protection, and homeland security and is well known due to its involvement in impeachment proceedings.
Caucuses
Founded in 1971, Congressman Conyers is the Dean and Founding Member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). CBC Members have joined together to empower America’s neglected citizens and address their legislative concerns. For more than 40 years, the CBC has consistently served as the voice for people of color and vulnerable communities in Congress and has been committed to utilizing the full Constitutional power, statutory authority, and financial resources of the government of the United States of America to ensure that everyone in the United States has an opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
Congressional Progressive Caucus
The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) consists of one United States Senator and seventy five members of the United States House of Representatives, and is the largest caucus within the House Democratic Caucus. Established in 1991, the CPC reflects the diversity and strength of the American people and seeks to give voice to the needs and aspirations of all Americans and to build a more just and humane society.
The goal of the Full Employment Caucus is to end the unacceptably high rate of unemployment and underemployment in the United States - and achieve a truly full employment society - more than 24 million jobs need to be created. The Congressional Full Employment Caucus will serve as a platform and working group for Members dedicated to identifying solutions to our current unemployment crisis and advocating for legislative action. Ultimately, the goal of the Caucus is to realize the dream of a society in which every American who wants to work has the right to some form of employment.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) comprises 26 Democratic members of the United States. The Caucus is dedicated to voicing and advancing, through the legislative process, issues affecting Hispanics and Latinos in the United States and Puerto Rico. The CHC was founded in December 1976 as a legislative service organization of the United States House of Representatives. Today, the CHC is organized as a Congressional Member organization, governed under the Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus
The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) is comprised of Members of Congress of Asian and Pacific Islander descent and members who have a strong dedication to promoting the well-being of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Currently chaired by Congresswoman Judy Chu, CAPAC has been addressing the needs of the AAPI community in all areas of American life since it was founded in 1994. CAPAC is non-partisan and bi-cameral.
The Democratic Caucus works with every Democratic member of the House of Representatives to help achieve consensus, bring their ideas and work to the forefront and ensure members have the tools they need to implement their goals. It is the only subgroup within the House of which every Democrat is a Member.
