I am very disappointed that my amendments to close Guantanamo and to end indefinite detention failed to pass on the House floor, but I will continue to fight to pass this critical legislation in the future. #CloseGitmo #IndefiniteDetention

Today I released a video statement in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place September 15th to October 15th. Iโ€™m proud to represent the Ninth District for many reasons, but one is that our district is one of the most diverse districts in America. We speak over 160 languages, and the Latino community is a critical part of the district that I am honored to represent. #HHM

Today, I am joining Congressional and Pentagon leaders to discuss Transgender Military Service. The symposium, titled "Inclusive Military Policy: Transgender Service, Like Repealing DADT, Strengthens the Force,โ€ follows Defense Secretary Ashton Carterโ€™s announcement last month of the lifting of the Pentagonโ€™s ban on #transgender personnel.

Clean-up of the Hanford nuclear waste site must be a priority for President-elect Trump. As Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, in recognition of this critical issue, I joined my fellow Washington delegation members in sending a letter to the President-elect urging him to make the ongoing clean-up of the Hanford facility a priority for his administration. #ACA repeal would throw away real progress we have made towards increasing the quality and accessibility of affordable healthcare. There is much work still to be done to improve our nationโ€™s health care system. While I support modifying provisions of the health care reform law that are burdensome to individuals and problematic for businesses, I disagree with Republicanโ€™s continued efforts to repeal the law. #ICYMI: I joined CNN yesterday to discuss my concerns with the national security threat posed by recent Russian hacking.

House Armed Services Committee Democrats
January 9 at 1:05pm

"Let me start with the positive. Senator McCain and Senator Graham, both in the Armed Services Committee in the Senate, have taken this very seriously. They wan...t an investigation, they want to look into it. Too many other Republicans in the House have been completely silent on it and, of course, the President-elect has dismissed it.

"The important thing here is this goes beyond our election. This is what the Russians have been up to for a long time, and it's been well documented. What Putin is trying to do is make the world safe for autocratic dictatorships. To that end, he is trying to undermine faith in liberal democracies. This is a major battle, it's not just in the U.S. .."

This intelligence report lays out carefully, in stark detail, how President Putin directed his military intelligence, hackers, and propagandists to intervene in... the election to help Donald Trump. Putin did this as part of an unprecedentedly bold campaign to discredit American values, weaken our support for our allies, dismantle the liberal world order, and, by all appearances, attempt to render the world safe for autocracy. The report also warns that Putin will keep trying to intervene in our elections and those of our allies. We must push back persistently and effectively to make clear, going forward, that there will be further consequences if this belligerent behavior continues.

It is highly irresponsible to dismiss these findings and call for a closer relationship with Russia in the same breath. Doing so suggests a disregard for the very real threat they pose to ourselves and the future of democracy worldwide.

Whatโ€™s more, in light of this information, nominating a national security adviser who has been paid to appear on Russiaโ€™s state-supported propaganda network, as well as a secretary of state who has received the Russian Order of Friendship and wants to lift sanctions on Russia, looks like a reward to Putin for his efforts. That is precisely the wrong message for us to be sending.

Today, I was deeply honored to speak in support of designating the January 8th Memorial as a national monument, an effort being led by my colleague, Rep. Martha McSally. Six years ago this Sunday, my close friend Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was meeting with members of her community to hear their concerns and take their questions so that she could bring their voices to Washington, D.C. Following the tragic shooting that day in Tucson, Gabby has shown incredible courage and de...termination. Gabbyโ€™s passion for justice, and her drive to make the world a better place has been transformative for the Tucson community and our country as a whole. I truly hope that this memorial will bring further peace to Tucson, give its residents a place to go and reflect, and stand as an enduring reminder that the entire country must come together to reduce this senseless violence in all of our communities.

I voted in favor of H.Res. 11 which objects to the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2234, although I have ongoing concerns. At the end of the day, I fully support Israel. As one of our strongest allies, Israel has been under threat since its creation, and the multi-faceted relationship we share with the Israelis requires our steadfast support.

On January 8, 2011, a gunman targeted a sitting member of Congress, her staff, and the constituents she was meeting with at a local grocery story. Tonight, I joined my colleagues led by Rep. Martha McSally, on the House Floor for a moment of silence to honor the victims of that tragic shooting and to show our support for my good friend and former colleague, Gabby Giffords.

Last night, I joined MSNBC to discuss the new House Rules, including the House Republicanโ€™s decision to abandon their last-minute attempt to disband the independent House Ethics Committee. The public reaction let the House Republicans know there was strong opposition from the American people to this sudden change in the House Rules.

'Senate push for new Russia hacking probe fizzles'

It is disturbing that the Republican leadership in both houses of Congress is refusing to allow a special co...mmittee or independent investigation of Russian involvement in the election, in order to provide cover for Donald Trump. This critical national security issue rises above party. We should be committed to comprehensively investigating what happened and to following the facts wherever they lead.
