Housing Resources for Native Americans
Senator Heitkamp has long been working to address North Dakota's housing crisis in Indian Country to make sure all families have a safe place to call home. By bringing top federal officials to North Dakota, working with community leaders, and talking to folks on the ground about the challenges they face, Senator Heitkamp continues to work toward solutions that will address housing challenges across the state. In 2012, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that a quarter of American Indian housing units have 'severe housing needs.' Senator Heitkamp has seen these dire conditions firsthand - including overcrowding, black mold, dilapidated, and non-permanent homes that are unable to withstand North Dakota's severe weather conditions. The Section 184 Indian Home Loan Guarantee Program is specifically designed for American Indian and Alaska Native families, both on and off native lands, for new construction, rehabilitation, the purchase of an existing home, or refinancing.

Housing Loan Guarantee Program
The Tribal Housing Activities Loan Guarantee Program (Title VI) provides an additional source of financing for affordable tribal housing activities to federally recognized tribes and Tribally Designated Housing Entities by allowing the tribe to use Indian Housing Block Grant funds to leverage additional funds from a lender.
