Congressman Chris Collins Votes to Support Our Nation’s Waterways, Great Lakes

May 20, 2014
Press Release

Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) voted in support of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA), which passed the House 412-4 today. The legislation contains funding and programs aimed at protecting the economy of the Great Lakes.

“The Great Lakes are an essential part of Western New York’s economy,” said Congressman Collins.  “Any threat to the Great Lakes should be taken seriously for both the potential economic and environmental fallout.”

WRRDA calls for studies on how invasive species in the Great Lakes impact federal spending and the economy, designates the Great Lakes ports as a single navigation system, and provides for an increase in dedicated funding for the Great Lakes out of the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund.

WRRDA contains no earmarks and strengthens our nations water transportation networks in order to promote competitiveness, prosperity and economic growth.

“WRRDA includes major reforms that will increase transparency, accountability and oversight in reviewing and prioritizing future resource and development activities,” said Congressman Collins. “Properly maintaining our nation’s ports and waterways will allow our nation to increase global trade and competitiveness, stimulating our economy and creating jobs.”

The Senate is expected to consider WRRDA for final passage later this week.
