Congressman Chris Collins Helps Secure $218,096 Grant for the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Company

Jul 6, 2016
Press Release

Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) today announced $218,096 in federal funding for the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Company. The grant was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG), which is designed to help first responders improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.

“Our local heroes need the proper resources to do their jobs and protect our communities,” said Congressman Chris Collins. “Many fire companies and emergency medical service providers are unable to purchase necessary equipment upgrades due to financial limitations. This funding will help create more efficient and effective first responders, and I am honored to help the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Company secure this vital funding.”

“The $218,096 in Assistance to Firefighters Grant award funds will allow the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Company to train new recruits and give our existing firefighters an opportunity to maintain their skills with continuous hands-on training,” said John Penzotti, Lewiston Volunteer Fire Company Chief. “Having this equipment in our district will allow for more frequent training and will also reduce the number of times a year we have to take our fire equipment and personnel out of our district to utilize remote training facilities. Allowing our firefighters to have maximum training opportunities will undoubtedly result in safer response environments for our volunteers and ultimately a better, more protected public.”

This federal grant will allow the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Company to purchase a mobile training facility and various training devices.

The AFG Program provides direct funding assistance to first-responder organizations to obtain much needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training.
