Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) does not want members of Congress to receive a salary in the event of a government shutdown and he has introduced the Government Shutdown Fairness Act.

The 27th Congressional District for the House of Representatives includes parts of Niagara County.

"As members of Congress, it is our job to keep government running, and if the government shuts down, I don't believe we should collect a salary during that time," Collins said. "It is wrong that members of Congress should continue getting paid while programs for veterans, seniors and many others are adversely impacted."

If Congress can't agree on a government funding bill by Sept. 30, the federal government will shut down. The House and Senate are at odds over Obamacare and can't agree on a bill.

According to Collins, the Government Shutdown Fairness Act is consistent with the 27th Amendment in holding salaries in escrow until the end of this Congress.
