2016 in Review: Supporting our military and veterans With two brothers who have served in the military, I have a firsthand appreciation for the significant sacrifices made by our service members and their families. They often endure several moves, multiple deployments, and at times spend months away from their loved ones while they support critical missions. We owe them so much for everything they continue to do to help keep our country the greatest nation in the world. I have made it one of my top priorities to help push policies and legislation directly benefits our active duty service members, and our amazing veteran community. ยท Supported the FY2017 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill. The bill worked to provide $190 billion in funding that would go to improving military facilities and would also ensure our veterans receive the care and compensation they have earned. With nearly 400,000 veterans who call South Carolina home, I am committed to taking care of them. ยท Voted for the FY2017 National Defense Authorization Act. As we look to future national security challenges, it is so important that our troops have the best equipment and gear available. Glad to see the NDAA addressed the need to push for better equipment, higher quality healthcare, and compensation that matches the rising cost of living. ยท Fought to keep S.C. Coast Guard Facility Open. Worked across the aisle with the Oregon delegation to help prevent the closure of the U.S. Coast Guard Facility in Charleston and a similar facility in Oregon. Losing the Air Facility and its search-and-rescue capabilities would have had serious effects on members stationed there, and we would have lost a critical safety measure that helps keep our mariners, residents, and tourists safe in the Lowcountry. ยท Helped address veteran homelessness. I was able to join several colleagues in introducing the bipartisan Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act. This legislation allows housing agencies to use more project-based vouchers to help veterans find affordable housing. ยท Had the amazing opportunity to meet hundreds of our veterans during Honor Flight programs. I was so incredibly humbled to have been able to thank real American heroes for their service to our country. Let us never forget everything they have, and continue to do for us. ยท Hosted a ceremony honoring the 25th anniversary of Desert and Shield Storm. It was an absolute honor to be able to recognize hundreds of veterans who served during these important campaigns. I was humbled for the opportunity to meet so many of our American heroes during the Greenville and Charleston events. During the 114th Congress, which has now come to a close, I have also supported several pieces of legislation that were focused on helping our active duty personnel and veterans. After hearing about the gross mismanagement of the Department of Veteranโ€™s Affairs, I was able to cosponsor the Department of Veteran Affairs Accountability Act, which focused on holding the VAโ€™s employees accountable for the quality of care they provided our veterans. I also joined several Senators in introducing the Veterans Access to Community Care Act, a bill that grants veterans greater flexibility in seeking medical care. Lastly, I was proud to announce my support for the Hire More Heroes Act, legislation that would encourage more companies to hire veterans, while providing relief from certain Obamacare mandates. I am forever grateful to each of our veterans, and I only hope they know how much their commitments have helped shape our nation and the world. As we look to the next Congress, I am excited to continue to look for ways to help our military and veteran community. They are our #trueAmericanheores.

In case you missed it, I went on the Senate floor to congratulate Clemson on a job well done and an amazing season (on and off the field). Incredibly proud of their success

Nineteen months ago, a heartless murderer attempted to start a race war. He believed the damage his racist hands wrought would undo Charleston, South Carolina, and maybe even the nation.

Today that man was rightly sentenced to death. I want to thank the jurors for their service during this agonizing case.

As we heard the testimony of survivors and the families of those killed and injured at Mother Emanuel throughout this trial, they once again left me in awe. Hearing firsthan...d recollections of that night, learning even more about how much the families of those killed loved and cared for them, I am sure I am not the only one overwhelmed with emotion.

While we can never bring back the Emanuel 9, we can ensure their legacy will live on forever. We will continue to stand behind the families, and their message of unity. Today is a pivotal moment in their road towards some sort of closure, and we will all be there with them on that journey.

To the families of the Emanuel 9, I say thank you. In your loss, you have given all of us more than we ever thought possible.

Team Scott is ALL IN and excited for tonightโ€™s championship game against Alabama Crimson Tide!

Led by Coach Swinney and Deshaun Watson, Clemson has had another amazing year. The good news โ€“ itโ€™s about to get even better when they bring the National Championship home to Death Valley. Looking forward to also winning our friendly wager with Senator Richard Shelby, who will provide Preisterโ€™s Pecans from Alabama to my office when Clemson wins. Go Tigers!

Senator Rubio and I were thrilled to welcome so many folks to our swearing in reception yesterday โ€“ the support was amazing! In fact, so many folks came out that the Senate Rules Committee had to shut the room down for a bit. We are so appreciative of those who joined us, and please know that I am truly honored you chose to spend some time with us yesterday.

Serving the people of South Carolina in the United States Senate is an amazing honor, and one I do not take lightly. I will continue my efforts to ensure that every family across our nation has access to the American Dream, and thanks to all of you for your support โ€“ I wouldnโ€™t be here without it!

Nice surprise today - my mom made the front page of the The Wall Street Journal!

It is an amazing honor to serve the people of South Carolina in the U.S. Senate, and in this new term I will continue working every day to make sure that every family in every zip code has the chance to prosper. I look forward to introducing my Opportunity Agenda, which is powered by my belief that education, job skills and community investment are the foundations of success.

I am committed to listening to my bosses at home in South Carolina, and bringing their ideas to Washi...ngton. We must all work together to move our nation forward, and to restore the American Dream in communities where hope has been lost for far too long.

On this humbling day, I also want to thank my mom, my brother and my entire family for their belief and support over the years. It is through the love of my family and friends and the awesome support from the people of South Carolina that I am here today.
