The Affordable Care Act has made health coverage affordable for millions of Americans. Share your story of how the ACA works for you in the comments below.
As 19 states raise their minimum wage, millions of workers are getting the raise they deserve.
Nobody working full time in this country should be living in poverty. Raising the minimum wage is a great start.
The happiest of holidays to everyone in the 5th, across Minnesota, and around the world. I hope for peace and joy for you and yours.
Join me and councilmembers Abdi Warsame and Linea Palmisano tonight for a conversation on how Islamophobia affects our community and what we can do about it.
On this day in 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Now, nearly 70 years later, we must reaffirm our commitment to the universal values of justice, fairness, and equality. We can honor this day by speaking out against bigotry wherever we see it. By advocating for the safety of those who remain oppressed around the world. And by refusing to allow prejudice to divide us.
On this Human Rights Day, we reaffirm our shared humanity. We recogni...ze that we are all one people, regardless of our country, our faith, or the color of our skin.
Happy Human Rights Day.
Iโm so proud of the young people in my district who are organizing for a better, healthier food system. GROW FOOD!
After months of protests, Iโm inspired by this victory by thousands of indigenous activists and Water Protectors, and millions of Americans who support them.
This is a victory for all people who fight for social justice. And it is a victory won by the power of peaceful protest - a reminder of what people can do when they stand up and organize.
We use environmental impact statements to understand how key projects will impact our environment and communities. I hope that Energy... Transfer Partners, and most importantly, the next Administration, recognize the concerns raised by the Standing Rock Tribe.
I also want to acknowledge that the responsibility for this project falls on the Energy Transfer board room, not the workers who are simply trying to do their jobs. Working Americans need our support as well. Thatโs why I support a broad infrastructure package that creates good jobs for millions of American workers.
We have a responsibility to respect the sovereignty of the Standing Rock Tribe, and to ensure their voices are heard. And we must ensure that the millions of people who depend on the Missouri and Cannonball rivers have access to clean water. As the Water Protectors at Standing Rock remind us every day: Water Is Life.
When I talk to people on the picket lines in Minnesota and around the country, they tell me they're striking for a better life for their kids and their families. They tell me they're working harder than ever, and still struggling to make ends meet. In the wealthiest country in the world, nobody working full time should be living in poverty. But the power of protest and working people's voices can make all the difference.
Politics might be the art of the possible, but organizing is the art of making more possible. Workers around the country are fighting to make better working conditions and better wages possible. And I stand with them.
Carl Higbie, one of Donald Trump's surrogates, went on cable TV last night and suggested Japanese-American internment camps could serve as a precedent for the creation of a registry of Muslims.
Here's my response:
Since Donald Trump was elected president, thousands of Americans have voiced fears over what our country might look like in the coming years. Last night one of the President-electโs surrogates showed us why so many people are afraid of a Trump administration.
...The internment of over 100,000 Americans of Japanese descent is one of the darkest marks on our nationโs history. Placing citizens in what amounted to concentration camps, is something we should expect from autocracies, dictatorships, and fascist regimes โ not the United States. The fact that our incoming President has considered internment as a model for how to move forward with the Muslim community is absolutely shocking. We canโt allow it to be normalized or enacted.
The President-elect has said on numerous occasions he wants to be the president of all Americans. He clearly is only interested representing some of us. If Donald Trump moves forward with the racist and divisive policies his team have been advocating for, we will be the first ones to stand up to him. We will be the first ones to tell him โno.โ
I was so humbled to meet with these NFL athletes who are lobbying Congress to do more about police-community relations and criminal justice reform. Fighting for justice and working to make change in your community is what being an engaged citizen and activist is all about.
And you know, it might not be the Top 10, but I've always wanted to be on SportsCenter!
My statement on the charging of Officer Jeronimo Yanez in the death of Philando Castile:
I trust Ramsey County Attorney Choiโs decision to charge Officer Yanez in the death of Philando Castile. Officer Yanez will get a fair trial, and will be presumed innocent until proven guilty. This is one of the reasons Choiโs policy decision to have Ramsey County review each officer-involved shooting individually, and not immediately refer to a grand jury, is so important. The victims of... officer-involved shootings, and their families, deserve justice. And that means moving away from the grand jury system. We must ensure that this is a step towards greater accountability and transparency, and not merely an isolated decision.
We may not be able to give solace to Philandoโs grieving family, his partner Diamond Reynolds or her daughter. But we can give them justice. And we can give them our promise that we will fight to make sure these types of shootings never happen again. We owe it to Philando.
On Sunday night, President-Elect Donald Trump appeared on CBSโ 60 Minutes. While on this program, the President-Elect took a minute to address his supporters who have harassed racial and religious minorities. The President-electโs supporters have drawn swastikas on schools and churches, encouraged political opponents to commit suicide, threatened Muslim-Americans with violence, and committing other hate crimes.
After addressing his supporters, the President-elect should turn... his attention to the man heโs selected to run his White House: Stephen Bannon. Mr. Bannon has called the Pope a โcommie.โ He has referred to the Civil War as the โwar of Southern Independence.โ He referred to liberal, college educated women as โa bunch of dykes.โ And sworn testimony in a legal case alleged Mr. Bannon was a domestic abuser and that he stated he โdidnโt want [his children] going to school with Jews.โ
Mr. Bannon is adored by white supremacists, white nationalists, anti-Semites, neo-Nazis, and the KKK. Itโs not hard to see why.
If the President-elect is serious about rejecting bigotry, hatred, and violence from his supporters, he must rescind Stephen Bannonโs appointment. This man shouldnโt be allowed inside the White House โ let alone run it.
I'll be on This Week and Meet the Press tomorrow morning talking about the future of our party.
Tune in.
Today we honor the extraordinary sacrifice of our veterans and their families. Every freedom and privilege we enjoy in this country, we owe to the men and women who put on a uniform and protect us.
Now more than ever, we need to have our veterans' backs like they have ours. We need to encourage local businesses to hire vets, and make it easier for veterans to start businesses of their own. We need to make sure we keep our VA efficient and well funded, and provide our vetera...ns with the best medical care our country has to offer.
On this Veterans Day, I'm thinking about my son, who is deployed on active duty. When he returns from fulfilling this great responsibility, he'll join the ranks of millions of American veterans, ready for what comes next. Let's make sure every one of them comes home to open doors, as well as open arms.
Thank you to all who serve. Today, we honor your sacrifice.
Happy Veterans Day.
