Lifelong Texan Corporal Anselmo Castro bravely served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Sadly, Corporal Castro passed away this fall, but I was honored to present his family with five medals he earned during his service.
The San Antonio community has shown tremendous support for the recent wave of women and children who have been released from family detention centers in the region. I joined RAICES to thank our city for its compassion and to discuss ways we can continue to assist these folks in need.
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement regarding the sinkhole that took the life of Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Dora Linda (Solis) Nishihara:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Sheriff’s Deputy Nishihara. I join the entire San Antonio community in mourning her passing and offer my condolences to her loved ones. Our city is grateful for her service and sacrifice.
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) today issued the following statement after voting in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2017:
“Today I voted to pass the FY2017 NDAA, an imperfect bill, but one that supports our military and national security around the world and strengthens our nation’s defense capabilities. I cast this vote with the priorities of Military City USA and our people in mind.

Today I was proud to help announce a $586K federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice that will support the Rape Crisis Center and San Antonio Police Department's efforts to combat human trafficking in Texas.
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) announced a $3,015,000.00 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The funding will support UTSA’s leadership of the National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium (NCPC), a partnership of five universities that work to improve American communities’ cyber defenses.
Today I was thrilled to congratulate San Antonio's champion Greater Helotes Little League team on winning the Softball Little League World Series and present them with a Congressional Record statement I made in their honor.
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement after University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) President Dr. Ricardo Romo announced his retirement at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year:
“Ricardo Romo transformed UTSA into an emerging research university that graduates more students and offers more degrees and more opportunities than it did the day he walked into the President’s office. He has made a profound difference.”

As a member of Congress, I worked with the San Antonio Police Department and the Department of Justice to secure a $1 million federal grant for SAPD body cameras. But we need more than just cameras to ensure law enforcement performs according to the high standards we expect of them. Today, Councilman Rey Saldaña and I called for greater accountability in the city’s proposed police contract. Making these reforms improves San Antonians' safety and benefits all the good officers whose service we cherish.
