Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) announced an eight-year, federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services expected to total $5,292,000.00 for The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). UTSA will receive the grant through the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which aims to reduce the burden of neurological disease by supporting and conducting neuroscience research.
The number of people with Alzheimer’s is rising in Texas and across the nation. This terrible disease takes a devastating emotional and financial toll on those whom it afflicts and their caretakers. I joined the Alzheimer’s Association: San Antonio & South Texas for an informative and moving discussion about Alzheimer’s and the urgent need to find a cure.
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) announced a $635,101.00 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The funding will go towards a UTSA College of Education and Human Development study that will evaluate the efficacy of the early childhood obesity prevention program “Míranos! Look at Us, We Are Healthy!” which promotes healthy growth of predominantly Latino children in Head Start.

San Antonio, TX – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled to strike down Texas House Bill 2 with its Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt decision:
"This ruling protects millions of Texas women's rights and their access to personal, critical healthcare. Thanks to the Supreme Court's decision, women can receive the care they need in safe facilities with good doctors."

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) issued the following statement after his vote in opposition to H.R. 5243, the Zika Response Appropriations Act, 2016:
“This legislation is a woefully inadequate response to a serious public health threat. By providing less than one-third of the funds President Obama requested to protect the American people from Zika, critical immediate needs – including mosquito control – lack essential resources.
I joined my colleagues and wore green today to support Mental Health Awareness month. Encouraging conversations about mental health will help us end stigmas around the issue and improve access to care. Already, millions of families have benefitted from the Affordable Care Act moving our nation closer to mental and physical health parity when it comes to insurance and coverage. I want to see that progress continue.

César Blanco (El Paso) today renewed their call for the Texas Legislature to prevent $350 million of health therapy cuts over two years from going into effect in Texas. Last week, the offices of the three elected officials participated in a call with the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to discuss the impending cuts’ likely impact on Texas families.
Washington, D.C. – Congressmen Joaquin Castro (TX-20) and Gene Green (TX-29) today sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requesting the agency evaluate impending harmful Medicaid cuts scheduled to go into effect in Texas. If state leaders do not act, an estimated 60,000 Texas children will lose access to medically necessary therapy services on October 1.
