Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Calls on Congress to Pass Protections for GMO Labeling

Washington, DC—Today, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) released the following statement calling on Congress to pass right-to-know GMO labeling legislation:  

 

“The Senate’s vote against the DARK Act this week is a victory for American consumers, and a significant roadblock to big food corporations who are opposed to transparency for the American people. But make no mistake—this fight is not yet over. Until labeling of our food is mandatory, as it is in 64 other countries around the world, these companies and special interest groups will continue to try and strip away years of progress in food labeling laws made by states across the country in order to keep the American people in the dark. I call upon my colleagues to pass the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, and its companion bill in the Senate (S.511), to give American consumers and families the right to make transparent, informed decisions about their health and safety.”  

 

Last year, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard was recognized as a top advocate of improving our nation’s food system for her fight against the DARK Act and voting record in support of transparent and sensible food policy. She is an original co-sponsor of H.R. 913, the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, which would require the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to label foods containing genetically-engineered ingredients. H.R. 913 is currently being considered in the House Energy and Commerce committee.
