House: U.N. move “an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace”

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives today in a bipartisan vote approved H.Res. 11, which objects to U.N. Security Council Resolution 2334 as an obstacle to Israeli and Palestinian peace. The Obama Administration failed to exercise its veto power when the resolution was considered by the Security Council last month.

Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.), long a supporter of a strong U.S.-Israel alliance, issued the following statement following today’s vote:

“The Obama Administration’s refusal to veto this resolution was one, final thumb in the eye of our closest Middle East allies after eight years of an Obama foreign policy that undermined Israel at every turn,” said Meehan. “But the U.N.’s action isn’t just one-sided and it isn’t just anti-Israel. It actually makes the prospect of real peace in the region less likely. It’s a step backwards for the peace process.”

The measure was approved with the support of both Republicans and Democrats.

“Today’s bipartisan vote shows that despite President Obama’s 11th-hour abandonment, Congress’ commitment to our Israeli allies remains as strong as ever. I’m hopeful that in coming years we’ll be able to restore the strength of the U.S.-Israel partnership and continue working together towards peace in the region,” Meehan said.
